Suprisingly good Fish and Chips

Dropped in Mac's Fish & Chips located on State steet in Santa Barbara which is the main street downtown. Order from a counter area and the staff delivers your order. Oh course this is what the place is known for but they really do a great job! They serve large pieces of fish and friendly and causal atmosphere. There's also a good selection of beer and then you can continue your stroll through the shops.

The staff of Mac's is very friendly. The fish is excellently crispy, hot and non-greasy. The chips were below average and tasted a bit rancid. Next time I will choose the fish only option.

In general, I find Santa Barbara to be overrated and full of itself. However, while browing the shops we stopped into Mac's for a quick lunch and were pleasantly surprised. The place is relatively small and very casual and friendly. We ordered the fish and chips (only one of many interesting things on the menu) and found the fish to... More

Stopped in on my way from LA to SF with my dad. Heard about this joint from Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. It was amazing! Best fish and chips I have ever had! Was very fresh and large with a wonderful Tartar sauce as well. Also happened to be a Latin festival day, so as we sat and ate we watched... More

I know that it is strange for English people to want to visit a fish & trip restaurant when on holiday but with a good recommendation from the hotel we went with a good vibe .... Rubbish! Old fat used to fry the chips, black pieces in the chips, worst salty greasy clam chowder ever, no atmosphere, complete lack of... More

Haggis, they got it and for as seasoned a traveler as we are and for much time as we have spent in the UK I had never had haggis until I went to Mac's in my own hometown. It was good I thought. The only difference from the old country is it's doesn't include sheep lung. That's illegal here in... More

My sister and I couldn't wait to try this place based on other reviews and love a good authentic English pub fish and chips. Sadly our enthusiasm vanished pretty quickly; greasiest fish I've ever been served. Couldn't even finish it. Slid right off the newspaper it was served on. The British would be offended to claim this was even close... More

The battered cod was excellent. The chips were disappointing. I also wanted to try one of their pies, but they had already sold out. I guess the pies are popular! They also have a small selection of beers on tap and in bottles.

We wandered into this place accidentally. Immediately on walking in, we noticed that every patron was British. Some kind of Rugby or other non-American sport was on the TV. On the wall was a sign denoting that the small fish and chips shop had been featured on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives on the food network. The staff was British.... More
