Good sushi bad service

The quality of the sushi is good, but the servers always seem like they are in a hurry. Being a long time customer, it's like fast food sushi, eat and leave.

I visited here because I heard good stories about their Sushi. We visited weekend evening, and the place was packed. We were forced to wait for 15 min even with reservation. We ordered Omakase, and Sushi quality was pretty bad in addition to bad apps. Sushi rice was hot because they don't have time to cool it, and it killed... More

We love this restaurant. Our 2 year old loves the sushi. It is always a treat. The only complaint is the line is always long.

Perhaps because I live in Asia and travel widely, I have dined in many excellent Japanese restaurants and authentic sushi joints; I find Sushi Sam's very disappointing. The wait was unusually long and the method the proprietor seats patrons was haphazard at best, even though he seemed to have a written list. Time after time I saw people who arrived... More

Generally speaking whenever you try and go to Sushi Sam's you will be met by a long line. Trust me - it is worth the wait. Sushi Sam's is an institution in San Mateo and with good reason. San Mateo probably has over 20 Japanese restaurants in a relatively small 5 block radius but hands down this is the place... More

We were early for a business meeting and starving... Walking down the Main Street, we noticed several Japanese restaurants, however this Sam's seemed to be the busiest one. While nothing fancy, walking into find eight people waiting was a good sign of things to come. I think we were greeted by Sam but I'm not sure. After taking a little... More

Omakase here is totally worth it - fresh, innovative, delicious. That said, we will sometimes decide to go some place else for sushi because we might not be in the mood for the cranky service. One server is AMAZING, friendly, outgoing, makes an effort - and then there is the cranky crew. Dismissive, hard to get attention, never smile, like... More

You cannot go wrong here. The simply focus on serving quality, tasty good sushi! You could wait a bit, but every bit is worth the wait. For all you foodies, treat yourself to this great spot in San Mateo.

This is the best Sushi spot on the peninsula. Sam is a master of his art. He finds the freshest fish daily and serves it in the best possible way. Just wait for Sam to say no soy sauce when he hands your sushi.

We had attempted to try it out quite a few times before but always chickened out because of the long line until yesterday. It was raining, and we really did not want to seek out another place in the rain. Hence I accepted it when told it would be about 45 minute wait. I think it took less than that.... More
