Gone now, but not forgotten

Paolo's was a wonderful place to eat. Food, service, location, ambiance -- all great. But not great enough, I guess. Paolo's closed just a couple of weeks ago, in August 2015.

When we moved to San Jose in 1960 as newly weds, the first and for a long time only "Fancy" Gourmet restaurant we visited was Paolo's. This August for our 56th Anniversary we went for the last time and had a Wonderful Dinner. Paolo's Closed August 8,2015. We are hopeful they will move to another location and reopen soon. Excellent... More

This was our "go-to" place for a nice dinner in downtown San Jose. Their original location was the scene for several work related team meals and they never disappointed. Since the move, it has been the perfect place to go before theatre. Now it's closed. We will miss you.

Paolo's landlord is not extending their lease, so they will be closing on 08 Aug 2015. It's a loss, because they have been among my favourites for Italian food. Over the years, We probably eaten our way through the menu, and have settled on the gnocchi and ossobuco as our favourites. In general, I don't like gnocchi. Paolo makes exceptional... More

A Friday evening in late July found Paolo's mostly empty. Excellent service, food quite good. Broad wine list with broad spectrum of prices. Had heirloom tomatoes with cheese - a 10 out of 10. Wife had halibut which she raved about. I had pappardelle which had excellent bolognese. Somewhat less than perfect as some noodle clumping. Would return.

My wife and I recently visited for an anniversary dinner. We chose Paolos as it was a Monday night and many of the valley's best restaurants are closed. We have dined here for special occasions in the past. We were quite disappointed. First, the ambiance and service were very nice. They obviously have wait staff that are well trained and... More

I took a client for dinner. I made the choice because of ratings but frankly was surprised because the food was ok. Granted, I didn't have pasta in an Italian restaurant - I chose the fish, but it wasn't anything special. I understand from the locals that many people dine there before a show. The bar scene looked like it... More

Going to Performing Arts for an enjoyable performance such as Book of Mormon (terrific)? Make it a habit to head out early (avoid crowds, free parking on Amaden just about 6) and visit PAOLO'S. Enjoy a special martini on Thursday evenings or their special cocktail, Ombretta di Paolo any evening. We did and then a short 2 minute walk to... More

I ate at Paolo's it seems like 100 years ago when it was an older place across the street fro old San Jose Hospital. It is still excellent food It is a bit pricey but the food is worth it. True dining experience.

Table #17 was perfect... with just the right amount of privacy and yet we didn't feel left out from the rest of the diners. Our server was nice and helpful. The food was tasty and came out in perfect timing to make it to the play next door. I had the Prix-fixe and my friend had the delicious Halibut special.... More
