We have finally learned how to order smaller portions at Black Bear and get to enjoy our meals without overeating. There homemade breakfast sausage is wonderful. There chicken fried steak is awesome and I had the cheeseburger salad (I know it's not very healthy) and loved every bite. One family member always has the multi-grain pancakes and they are fantastic.... More

We ate at the Black Bear Diner while staying at the Laurel Inn. (We had been to Bay Area locations with family.) The food was good--we shared the Prime Rib special-- and the atmosphere was, well, themed. ("Lumberjack-special") Service was fine. Bonus points- when the waitress made a minor mistake on the kids meal dessert which would have been fine... More

I have enjoyed Black Bear Diner while traveling, especially the one in Yreka. The Salinas version has extremely slow service. Our server was friendly but apologetic. The restaurant wasn't that crowded, so I don't know quite what the hangup was. This was my husband's first visit, however, so he wasn't impressed. I know what the chain is capable of, though,... Very good homestyle cooking. I like country style food, meat vegetables. The pot roast and mashed potatoes was very good with large portions. Friendly, efficient, waitress. Can't go wrong here.

This place has everything good you have ever associated with a dinner and none of the bad, except for the calories. Best meat loaf I have had in a long time. Super friendly service, too. The menu includes classic diner food and modern alternatives.

It took 45 minutes from time of ordering until food was delivered. Burger was overcooked. Have been to other locations and everything went well.

My favorite short order restsurant, bar none. They'll make a traditional comfort food dinner minus the bread and the carb load just to save you 500 calories without losing the enjoyment factor.

After a loooong day of traveling and an unsuccessful stop in Santa Cruz on Memorial Day weekend (you'd think I'd know better since I live near the Jersey shore) I checked into my hotel in Salinas and walked over to the diner. I sat at the counter and every one of their employees was incredibly pleasant to me. The menu... More

Sometimes you are surprised by restaurants that are "tied" to a motel. This Black Bear sits in the middle of the Laurel Inn hotel. We had driven all day and just wanted a nice meal without a lot of trouble. This fit the bill nicely. A little small, so I suspect could get crowded, but was not when we were... More

We went to breakfast at the Black Bear Diner, my grandson had a big breakfast, and he emptied his plate (a rarity) so I know the food was very good. I had two large (and I do mean large) biscuits and coffee, the biscuits, oh "so good". This was my second time, returning for the biscuits, butter and jelly, and... More
