The Steinbeck House is the boyhood home of John Steinbeck, and it's also a beautiful example of an early 20th century Victorian style home. So the setting alone is worth going. The menu changes weekly and is also made with the freshest ingredients you can imagine. Salinas sits in the middle of the salad bowl of the world so the... More

I lived in Salinas several years ago, and this was my favorite place to have lunch. I was able to bring my husband and daughter here this past weekend and it was just as wonderful as I remembered it. The prices have gone up a bit, but it's worth it. The cream of green onion soup was outstanding...I could have... More

This building was the actual home of John Steinbeck and is run by volunteers who put their heart and soul into doing an awesome job. The food is outstanding and all prepared onsite. There is a small gift shop in the basement which includes some of the excellent recipes. Part of the house is still kept intact and able to... More

Step inside this grand old home and leave your troubles at the door. Enjoy a fine meal, perhaps even a glass of wine, and take in what it must have been like for John Steinbeck to call this place - home. It's always fun to go there and meet people from all over the world. Be sure to take a... More

Located on State route 101 in Central California, the town of Salinas has its share of chain and fast food restaurants. But if you take the time to find it, there is an old Victorian house, a national monument in fact, that is the birthplace of the great American writer John Steinbeck and which today is also a small restaurant... Very nice, informative staff. Lovely lunch and all 3 of us enjoyed our various meals, including cobb salad, chicken/veggie wrap and chicken/mushroom crepe. (This was enjoyed by a man who generally avoids mushrooms at all cost - which is saying it really was great, even with fresh mushrooms.) The tomato soup was wonderful as was the Brandy Alexander pie my... More

The draw is author John Steinbeck's charming Victorian birthplace. The service by members of the ladies' auxiliary makes one feel welcome. The excellent food urges one to dawdle. The fun shop in the basement is what finally propels you out!

2 blocks from Steinbeck museum (itself very worth visiting) and a lovely lunch in the restored house he grew up in - really good, reasonable light lunch - I cant imagine not eating there if you are a Steinbeck fan..worth visiting from Monterey/Carmel region.
