I had not heard - or otherwise known - of Palo Alto Sol prior to meeting a friend there for dinner recently. Knowing that Mexican/"Tex-Mex" cuisine can either be really good or quite terrible, I trusted that my friend knew it was quite good. The restaurant is not particularly large, and may be difficult to immediately spot if you're not... More

Being from Texas, I like to think I'm a good judge of Mexican food. This place is a solid choice for what I would call Tex-Mex. The Food: Chips and salsa to start. Chips are thick and crunchy, and you have a choice of three different salsas (all delicious). Yummy. They have a great mole sauce (according to my sister).... More

If you like Mexican comfort-food this is your place. Clearly one of the best restaurants on California Avenue. It's packed at lunch. Service is professional and friendly. The food is very good. I'd definitely return. If you like shrimp get the shrimp enchilada with chipotle (spicy) sauce. Delicious.

Dinner. We were starving and went about 9PM. I'm Veggie... Added ambience; candle on the table. The guacamole was chunky, with garlic etc. Great. The Salad dressing must have had 5 whole bulbs of garlic, it was excellent! The beans were good but does not measure up to El Burro in Campbell....but nothing does. Will go back for the salad... Visiting family in Palo Alto, the consensus for dinner was let's go to Sol. There were five of us, so we had to wait a few minutes. Once at our table the service was very friendly. My only complaint, minor as it is, is that they did not take a drink order before they asked us for our dinner order.... More

Palo Alto Sol is one of the busiest places on California Avenue and can often be crowded and quite noisy. That said, it is worth dining at. Service is efficient though inevitably you may have a wait if the restaurant is full. The menu is extensive and the staff can accommodate particular requests and vegetarian options. The enchiladas and burritos... More

Fair prices for FANTASTIC food! It's owned by the same people who own Vive Sol in Mountain View, which is also a five-star experience. Their enfrijoladas ($14) are a vegetarian entree to die for, although I had to ask for it specially since it didn't appear on the menu. My fiance's mole enchiladas (also $14) had him dancing in his... More

The menu and food were OK, but not outstanding. Noise made conversations nearly impossible for the seven of us in our party, especially for those at the far ends of the table. The place is a step up from Taco Bell, with a more extensive menu, but not worthy of a really great rating. The burrito verde I ordered was... More

I go to Palo Alto Sol occasionally since I live close by, but I am almost never treated with respect or gratitude when I pick up my take-out orders. I only go because I like their mole poblano. It's expensive ($30 for mole poblano and 1 chile relleno). We almost always go to Estrellita in Los Altos, which has much... More

Family recipes continue to satisfy diners. Popular with Stanford students and other locals--better than most of the Mexican alternatives.
