Foods are not bad, authentic enough taste of Central & Northern Chinese cuisine. Staffs are efficient but less the friendly look.

We have been eating at Hunan Garden (now Mandarin Roots) for several years. My favorite dish is the spicy fish - little fish filets that have been fried with some spices and salt. The flavor is something that I have not been able to duplicate anywhere else. The other fun dish is the fried tofu. We have had our annual... More

The menu has some traditional southern dishes like ma po tofu, sichuan chicken, and kung pow chicken; the presentation is creative and fun, also some northern (Peking duck) and just plain invented dishes like pork belly quesadilla and kalbi beef tacos. Highly recommended. I've enjoyed Chinese food in the Palo Alto area for 40 years now and this is definitely... More

They changed the name to Mandarin Roots, be advised, and the food is less Hunan than Mandarin. Whatever it's called, the food is very good. Duck, pork, vegetarian and noodle dishes are all excellent.

We have enjoyed this restaurant on many occasions. It is attractive and comfortable and the food is always good. The menu offers many standard Chinese dishes but you can also explore more exotic, authentic dishes. The owners are friendly and always seem to recognize us when we come which is a nice touch. We will keep coming back

THIS RESTAURANT HAS A NEW NAME----MANDARIN ROOTS! We loved the old Hunan Garden but I would argue that this new iteration is much better. We had Peruvian Shrimp MUSHU, soft shell crab spring roll, Teapot Soup, and some phenomenal noodles. All were superb. the service friendly and helpful, the prices very reasonable.

We had an excellent lunch here. All of the food was great and pretty. The duck was a bit tough, but the chow fun was great, the seafood soup excellent. There is no doubt that we will be back.

We have been there several times. The service is great, and the people are just nice. The food is also very good... very long menu as many Chinese restaurants! We were never disappointed. We'll be back!
