Imagine that you're winding your way through narrow streets near the Pantheon in Rome. You stumble upon a crowded trattoria where servers hurry by carrying plates of pasta carbonara, rigatoni al pomodoro, bowls of gnocchi swimming in melted gorgonzola-as well as platters of grilled meats and sausage. The aromas are divine, the atmosphere lively and joyful. You have found Maccheroni, a tremendously popular trattoria owned by Luciano Flamini. A similar atmosphere has been created at il vecchio on the Monterey Peninsula. Il vecchio means "the old," and everything about this trattoria romana makes you think you've discovered a traditional dining spot favored by Roman cognoscenti.

Pasta, chicken, dessert & wine--EXCELLENT!

Okay, here we go. I have eaten at this place several times over the past year or so and I have always been pleasantly pleased with the quality of the food presented to my table. I do recommend eating here but please do make reservations as the wait can be much too long if you just show up. In... read more

The owners of this restaurant had lived in Italy and wanted to bring typical Italian fare to their US home. Several people recommended the place. The atmosphere is charming- there are chairs nailed to the wall for decor. The food is superb. Pasta is housemade and they feature traditional Chianti (hard to find in the US). We split Lamb Ragout... More

Meatballs appetizer fantastic. Good house wine. Three main dishes uniformly excellent. I must make an excuse to go back to Monterrey and try again. Owner actually doubled as server, checked on meal, chatted amiably. Very nice ambiance. Try this place for sure. Dinner was about $100 for three.

We were here as a group with 4 adults and 5 children. The food was very good - food we ordered ranged from filet mignon to spaghetti and meatballs. Everyone in the group was happy with what they ordered. The thing that stood out was the very good waiting staff who were helpful with suggestions and patiently taking our rather... More

First visit. All 4 of us ordered different items. We all agreed that we would certainly order the same item again. Rustic atmosphere that actually works. Friendly staff. The staff are very courteous with families with and without noisy children. Will definitely return.

this is a favorite for many locals; comfortable Italian restaurant, fair prices, good food, and friendly service. Just a word of notice; if you go with a larger group and plan to split the bill, they will not take more than 2 credit cards... so bring some cash.

We were looking for an Italian food restaurant, chose this one based one 4 1/2 stars, should have read the reviews. The food was average nothing special, I thought rather pricey for what you got. Not to impressed with the wine list. It did not have the ambiance to want to stay and enjoy ourselves.

This is one of our favorites in Pacific Grove. Away from the Cannery Row crowd, it was a pleasant find. We have been going there for the past few years (since it opened). We actually met the owner. Nice guy. Never have we been disappointed, except maybe the wait time. It is very popular with the locals. It is worth... More

Have eaten here many times. Every time I go I am disappointed, if I wasn't with a group of people I probably wouldn't come back. I've tried many different dishes, but there isn't anything that is really very exciting. Very mundane.

I was staying at a modest hotel in Monterey, and I wanted a nice meal. I figured the desk clerk might know something, but I would not expect him to eat at a high end place. I asked--and he told me "El Vecco" or something like that was supposed to be really good. I chekced tripadvisor--and drove there. I was... More
