Imagine that you're winding your way through narrow streets near the Pantheon in Rome. You stumble upon a crowded trattoria where servers hurry by carrying plates of pasta carbonara, rigatoni al pomodoro, bowls of gnocchi swimming in melted gorgonzola-as well as platters of grilled meats and sausage. The aromas are divine, the atmosphere lively and joyful. You have found Maccheroni, a tremendously popular trattoria owned by Luciano Flamini. A similar atmosphere has been created at il vecchio on the Monterey Peninsula. Il vecchio means "the old," and everything about this trattoria romana makes you think you've discovered a traditional dining spot favored by Roman cognoscenti.

We were looking for an Italian food restaurant, chose this one based one 4 1/2 stars, should have read the reviews. The food was average nothing special, I thought rather pricey for what you got. Not to impressed with the wine list. It did not have the ambiance to want to stay and enjoy ourselves.

This is one of our favorites in Pacific Grove. Away from the Cannery Row crowd, it was a pleasant find. We have been going there for the past few years (since it opened). We actually met the owner. Nice guy. Never have we been disappointed, except maybe the wait time. It is very popular with the locals. It is worth... More

Have eaten here many times. Every time I go I am disappointed, if I wasn't with a group of people I probably wouldn't come back. I've tried many different dishes, but there isn't anything that is really very exciting. Very mundane.

I was staying at a modest hotel in Monterey, and I wanted a nice meal. I figured the desk clerk might know something, but I would not expect him to eat at a high end place. I asked--and he told me "El Vecco" or something like that was supposed to be really good. I chekced tripadvisor--and drove there. I was... More

Il Vecchio (the old man) is a typical NorCal coastal Tratorria. We dined there this past Friday evening. Reservation honored on time. Waitress was Italian and put up with my limited Italian 101 practice. Rare to find a decent selection of Sicilian wines and this list did not disappoint. My wife is a Polenta fan. So her choice of a... More

We were lucky to find this lovely little restaurant a few blocks inland from our bay-front hotel. The food was excellent and a real value compared to the more well-known restaurants in area. I enjoyed a filet Mignon that rivaled any I've ever eaten, and a delicious braised pork dish. Couldn't have done better!

Perhaps a new favorite in the Monterrey area! Party of six, every meal a winner. Not your standard Italian fare but well made, seasoned, and beautifully presented. The urban neo-rustic setting is a plus - wood paneling, bar and tables all custom designed and built by the owner's daughter. Make a reservation; after four years in business, the night-time waits... Very authentic and nice fusion type of dishes. House wine is awesome and they will help pair you with many great bottles. The homemade pasta melts in your mouth and you feel very welcomed to be there.

We stumbled in here for lunch on the recommendation of the gal next door at the tourist info building. They call it the Workers Lunch. For $9.50 you get salad and two pastas. You don't get to choose, as each day M-F they list what they are serving. They don't really make this clear as it appears that they assume... More

I have now been to Il Vecchio four times. On three occasions, we so wanted to love it but each time something happens that was disturbing, frustrating and a total disappointment. The food is good and the prices are great but the service and overall attitude was lacking. On a busy night we were rushed through our meal and hovered... More
