Great French/Japanese Style Cuisine

This place is delicious and I think under priced for the quality. My wife and I shared a Mushroom Bisque and Shrimp Tempura for appetizer. Absolutely amazing. Especially the soup. I had the sand dab fish w/ capers and it was delicious. We were with a large group and every had good things to say about their entrees. They brought out a variety of desserts and I tested all of them; they were all good. The server was attentive but not obtrusive. Nice atmosphere.

I made it a point to visit Maxes.....as a lover of real French bistro cooking. I was on my way back from a week at the CIA.... not that one Culinary Institute of America ( the premier chefs school in St Helena.) where I took a professional course in French bistro cuisine and was armed with my new knowledge from... Had dinner here passing through on a road trip south with hubby and teen. Busy for an off season Tuesday night. Upper end of the scale compared to what we've been spending but we did have wine and dessert drinks too. Recommend the 09 Zinfandel for $40. Hubby had ribeye and teen had grilled chicken while I had the special... More

Our family had the sand dabs and calamari. Both were cooked to perfection and very tasty. The service was good and very polite, The staff seemed genuine in trying to make the experience enjoyable and on departure requested you return soon. The portions are generous and you do not leave hungry.

First time dining here and I wasn't disappointed. The best butternut squash ravioli I have ever had.. The sauce was divine. Tried the mango mouse - very good and I'm not even crazy about mangoes. Went during the week and had no trouble getting a table without reservations. My husband had the pretrale sole and was very pleased with his... More

Wow!!! what can I say, but outstanding in every respect. My wife ordered the lamb shank which was perfectly done with a delicate flavor of herbs and spices. My mushroom and brie raviolis were superb. The brie cheese didn't overpower the delicate flavor of the mushrooms. We started with the Tempura ahi roll as a starter, which was excellent. The... More

We've been twice and will return. I consider Max's Grill to be a find. It is a pleasant place with a fine menu of reasonably-prices selections, and a fixed-price three-course meal with several entree selections. Service is very nice.

A quiet Sunday evening in Pacific Grove, but this restaurant was pretty busy. The Japanese chef is well versed in French cookery and our main courses of salmon and a strong ravioli were very competent. We were served by the chef's wife, a charming lady. The mango mousse dessert was particularly delicious.
