I recommend making a reservation at the sushi bar - they make an art of preparing sushi. I normally use quite a bit of soy and wasabi on my sushi but they prepare it so well that you don't need any special sauces! The special salmon is their best. I've ate at all the local southern california fine dining japanese cuisines and the food is no comparison to Koisan. If you want to pay a high priced dinner that looks better than it actually tastes (hardy har har) then go to any of your newport sushi restaurants. Koisan is an exceptional Japanese restaurant. After eating at Koisan for almost 25 years, I have tremendous difficulty eating Japanese food anywhere else simply because other Japanese restaurants cannot match the quality Koisan delivers. Koisan's food is sublime. It is, hands down, the best sushi in California. Osamu (Sam), the owner and sushi chef, takes great pride in his restaurant.... more
