Good food

Delicious! Their standards are fab: corn waffles, fried chicken, beignets. We bought a signed cookbook too and the recipes turn out great. Watch West Oakland hood, leave no valuables in the car.

Sublime cornmeal waffles, best ever; exquisite apple cider syrup. Chicken is good, too. Creative parking, long wait, recommend sitting at the counter. Nice to see the plantings growing up along Mandela Parkway in West Oakland. There's a successful cook book with great, familiar recipes: "Brown Sugar Kitchen," too.

Go on a weekday, when the line's not quite so long (but beware, they're closed Mondays)! The fried chicken is the best I've ever had anywhere. The waffles come with a unique cider-based syrup, but pure maple can be ordered a la carte as well. Add the poached eggs over (superb) cheddar grits for a full understanding of why this... More

...though I hate to cook, my food is SO MUCH BETTER! Plus, the owner & the waiters were rude! Hey! It's just a GREASY SPOON, IN THE GHETTO! We were totally invisible to them! It was a long wait to finally be assisted, and an even longer wait for totally underwhelming food. I bike, or drive by here daily, to... More

By far the best fried chicken and the best waffle I've eaten anywhere. The hash is also out of this world and the coffee is perfect. However, the menu prices are ridiculous--hardly a good value for the kind of food they are serving (it's breakfast for goodness sake!). $15 for fried chicken and waffles? You get two small pieces of... More

Service was slow. Staff acted as if they were too cool. What's that about? Weirdly off putting. 30 minutes waited for food. Ribs great. Chicken weak. Not crunchy at all. Waffle great. Cole slaw and black out peas bland, bland. Expectations exceed reality.

I got the pulled pork BBQ sandwich. The pork was great and the collards I ordered were incredible. The bread on the sandwich was soggy, though. Next time I'll order the chicken and waffles, now that looked like food perfection.

Went with friends, so got to taste several menu items. Cornmeal waffles really light and delicious, though wasn't crazy about the chicken. Good flavor, but not crispy enough for me. Cheesy grits and eggs - yes! That was my favorite! The coffee was not that great, but I like mine really strong, so consider that it may be fine for... More
