Grateful for the urban pioneers who have the guts to branch out into new areas of Oakland. And glad that's it's worked out well for Tonya Holland et al. High quality product. Super great breakfasts and baked goods. How can you go wrong with a GREAT biscuit. I really appreciate the higher quality of ingredients ... the free range eggs,... More

Oakland is a sketchy place so the location had me nervous. Chicken and waffles for breakfast? Wow....it was amazing. This is a must do if your in the area.

So I had food envy because my friends ordered the cornmeal waffles and I ordered gumbo. The gumbo was good, but only good- I have had better. Portions are generous. The food is not cheap. The waffles were so crispy and rich and just wonderful. Another point for the desserts- totally inexpensive and awesome. I had sweet potato pie and... More

It's a little hard to get to and you can expect a wait if your a little late for breakfast. I take clients there for breakfast and everyone loves it. You can't beat the chicken and waffles. I had a hash this last time and it was good but not great. It's a fun place to eat Nice family breakfast... More

Dropped in for brunch on the way from SFO around mid-morning on the weekend. Place packed, folks waiting around outside, not too bad. Parking lot across the street made it nice to have adequate off-street parking (free). Sat at lunch counter, so packed, like sardines -- not exactly a leisurely way to dine. Can watch action in kitchen. Had the... More

The cornmeal waffles and fried chicken are delicious and classic. My personal favorite is the smoked pork has with two poached eggs ... smoky, spicy, and like nothing you've ever had before. They open at 7:00am on weekends, we arrived about 7:15 (after dropping someone at the airport) and sat right down, but by 8:30 there was quite a line.... More

I was in downtown SNFC, looking for breakfast, and TripAdvisor listed this place at #6. Even better, they actually serve breakfast on a weekday morning! It was great. Comfortable, great cooking, good prices, friendly staff. Nice to see a place that deserves its high rating!

When in Oakland, the Brown Sugar Kitchen is where I go for breakfast. The food is excellent and the wait staff go out of their way to make sure customers are well taken care of before, during and after the meal. I highly recommend the cornmeal waffle with apple cider syrup. Then again, I sometimes make a trip just to... More

This restaurant, only open for lunch, is fantastic. It's a bit of a diner -- in an industrial area. Service was absolutely delightful. We sat at the counter because the wait for a table -- on a Wednesday afternoon -- was so long. Being at the counter was fun though because we could watch the chefs. My companions had waffles... More

We found ourselves in downtown Oakland recently and decided to try Brown Sugar Kitchen for a late breakfast. What a wonderful experience. I opted for the daily special: Smoked pork hash with poached eggs. My wife went for the cheesy grits with poached eggs. Somehow, she got eggs the way I like them (runny yolk) and I got them the...
