Outstanding, memorable Ethiopian food

And obviously everyone in the bay area knows this, because they all seemed to be there the night we visited. And obviously everyone in the bay area knows this, because they all seemed to be there the night we visited. Hard to get a table--but actually, all those people added to the tangible energy of this packed, casual restaurant. And that has a lot to do with the communal style of eating that is authentic, Old World Ethiopian. Everything's shared.... More

No cutlery, just use your fingers! Meals are served with individual baskets of injera bread which is used to grasp the meats and vegetables on your plates and pass it to your mouth! Try to get an outside table, so much quieter even though it is on the street - the inside can be noisy as voices and laughter reverberate... More

Very generous servings of injera and food is excellent. I loved the meat and veggie pastries (an appetizer), they were very flavorful and so good I could have eaten them all, but had to share with others. The veggie combo had plenty of food to select from and the generous baskets of injera made for a filling meal. It has... More

Having wanted to eat at cafe Colucci for a long time, we finally did so and we were quite pleased. From their website we learn the secrets of Ethiopian cooking. In Part, "The essence of Ethiopian cooking lies in the spices that vary from the fiery potent to the most delicate. Exotic spices and fresh herbs are cleverly combined to... More

My first Ethiopian dinner. We had the veggie and meat sampler - what a good experience! I loved every bite...from the pickled vegetables to the sauced meats. Eating with your fingers is a little off putting but not horrible...Oakland isn't a place I long to return to but if I did I'd definitely go back to this little gem!

The East Bay area is famous for it's Ethiopian restaurants and with good reason. My wife has lived in the Bay area for many years and has sampled lots of different options, this is her favorite. I've been to a few Ethiopian places myself, around the bay area and elsewhere and I'm inclined to agree. The food is fresh and... More

I came here in March with my wife for dinner. We've eaten at a few other Ethiopian places in Oakland, and this place was decent, but not quite the best. For starters, they charge $2 extra for their gluten-free injera (the other places we've been to do NOT). The service was a little slow, but when the food arrived, it... More

Went to this wonderful restaurant in a recent visit to Oakland. We were seated immediately upon entering the restaurant (we did not have a reservation). Our server was attentive. The menu had such an interesting selection, it was hard to choose. When the food arrived, it was hot, beautifully presented and delicious. The flavors were fresh and unique. I was... More

Ever since my niece went to Berkeley in mid-2000, we've been making pilgrimages to this humble spot that serves as a veneer for the flavor bombs that wait inside! Even though my husband is a carnivoire, he goes with the veggie sampler (be sure to add the mushroom tibs). Okay, it's true, Ethiopian food is my favorite--I'm writing this review... More

Cafe Colucci has the best vegetarian Ethiopian food I have ever had. You MUST try the eggplant tibs and the Mitten Shoro (as the menu reads "you will be hooked for life"). The meat dishes are also quite good, and the Ethiopian beer (both dark and light) is a treat. My only complaints are that sometimes there is a bit... More
