Paella haven in downtown Oakland

Regardless of type of cuisine, this is hands-down my favorite restaurant in downtown Oakland. Don't overlook the tapas -- spicy potatoes or cabbage may sound boring but our table found them so good that we got an extra order. Paella is out of this world. This is place is right in the heart of downtown Oakland. The decor is awesome, the food was great (both the main dish and the dessert) and they have a great selection of local beers. Their dishes are mostly family style (actually couple style), so solo diners might find themselves with a limited menu, but still a good selection. For... More

Phenomenal food designed for sharing, creative drinks (a sherry menu and a cider menu?!), reasonable service. The tapas are great. Who would have thought something as simple as avocado and grilled padano peppers would be addicting. And the mains aren't far behind (try the squid ink paella, if you don't mind picking up crayfish and cracking them with your teeth).... More

I came here for dinner for First Friday in Oakland without a reservation. I was the first to arrive of a party of six - a good hour and half before my other party. I asked what their availability would be when my party was expected to arrive. The hostess politely said that they were booked completely for reservations but... More

I eat out often. And I live in the bay area. The food here was minimal and below average in my book. The dishes we got were simple and could've been made in five minutes at home. There is nothing special about it. Everything was expensive, including the drinks.

I tend to end up in restaurants by myself as I travel a fair bit for work. I visited Duende on a Monday evening and was pleasantly surprised by the overall atmosphere. It was quite lively for a Monday and the bar was fairly packed. The bartender was quite friendly and accommodating and the cocktail menu had some interesting choices.... More

I have eaten twice in the Bodega and once yesterday in the main restaurant. Each time, I brought 3 to five other friends. Each set of friends were completely different from the other for a total of 10 different extra opinions. Every single person has loved this place. It is on the higher end of the price spectrum for Oakland,... More

Study the menu and ask questions. Might be a lot of new terms and names for many. The wait staff us excellent and will make suggestions and explain the items. Suggest one large dish to share and a number of small plates to share as well. Everything we tried was excellent. For desert, the iced coffee chocolate chip ice cream'

We ate here with two other couples and had just a totally great experience. Every dish was excellent - traditional paella was very good, but definitely try the duck paella - it breaks with tradition a bit but is one of the best dishes I have ever had. Small plates were all superb, from the super crispy patatas bravas to... More
