Break away from the menu doldrums

I enjoyed everything about this restaurant. Despite the innovation in food, I find myself uninspired by most menus these days. Duende offers entirely new options. Our raw swordfish appetizer was great, and our paella was out-of-this-world. I'm a tough grader and the Spanish red wine options were... read more

We love Spanish food and the food here didn't disappoint. We started with a shared tapa. A small salad with asparagus and egg. Our main dish was an unusual paella. This had pasta in it instead of rice. It was very good. It was a little soupy for my tastes. I had the sangria cocktail that was also very good.... More

I was incredibly impressed with Duende in every way! My friend and I met here to catch up after a few years, and we sat at a community table for almost four hours. Not once did we feel rushed or pushed out by the serving staff, and we felt very well cared for! I ordered a glass of red wine... More

I let my husband eat most of it but the flavors and veggie were tasty. panna cotto with blackberry sauce and 3 berries was yum. cake with baked apples, orange rind and whipped cream. So... More

Three of us had dinner here prior to a show across the street at the Fox Theatre. The menu is mostly small plates. We shared five of them and a carafe of wine. The plates came out one by one. The food was really interesting and it was fun to see what came next. Get a reservation and give yourself... More

A popular restaurant, lots of noise and bustle. If you're looking for healthy food, forget it. The food is very rich and not exceptional. Tapas, and family style platters.

Regardless of type of cuisine, this is hands-down my favorite restaurant in downtown Oakland. Don't overlook the tapas -- spicy potatoes or cabbage may sound boring but our table found them so good that we got an extra order. Paella is out of this world. Bring friends, get the smaller portions and order several for the table. It's the way... More

This is place is right in the heart of downtown Oakland. The decor is awesome, the food was great (both the main dish and the dessert) and they have a great selection of local beers. Their dishes are mostly family style (actually couple style), so solo diners might find themselves with a limited menu, but still a good selection. For... More

Phenomenal food designed for sharing, creative drinks (a sherry menu and a cider menu?!), reasonable service. The tapas are great. Who would have thought something as simple as avocado and grilled padano peppers would be addicting. And the mains aren't far behind (try the squid ink paella, if you don't mind picking up crayfish and cracking them with your teeth).... More
