Never Been Let Down by this Great Vietnamese

It had been many years since we last dined at Le Cheval, but we certainly weren't disappointed this time around. We started off with my favorite - shrimp rolls, which if you haven't ever tried Vietnamese food, these are rolled in rice paper with mint leaves rather than the fried variety. As... read more

I no longer live in the Bay Area but whenever I'm back to visit this is one of my favorite restaurants to dine. I've dined there since the 80's and never been disappointed yet. I use to take my kids when they were young and now its a custom for us whenever I'm there visiting. Located in the Jack London... More

Like most large (200 seats, more or less) Le Cheval has very spotty quality. If you are lucky, you will get tasty, interesting food. However, on two of three visits, the food was boring beyond belief. I won't be going back. There are too many really good restaurants in Oakland.

The restaurant is located behind the Marriott Oakland City Center and within easy walking distance to the BART station. When I came in, there was no greeting at the door, just the hostess staring at me. When I asked for the menu she just handed it to me with no explanation. OK, maybe just a one-off incident. The dining room... More

I came here for lunch with a friend and I am always pleased to eat here. They serve carrot soup first and then take your order. We shared the spinach noodles and the birds nest with soft noodles. Both were very good and service was good.

Had a group lunch here and service was pretty bad. Some people received food in 5' others in 40', really inconsistent. Food was ok though, but difficult to rate bacause I had to wait so long.

I attended here with a large group (about 25 people, I believe) for dinner at a work conference in Oakland. The food was very good and very authentic. However, I believe our large group was too much for the servers (or the kitchen, or both) to handle. They had some trouble with the orders, not understanding what we ordered, or... More

First of all , the waitress forgot to pick our table, and we had to call for service. The waitress said she was new. Secondly, they were out of the whole fish. The substitutes did not live up to our expectations, Although we had a reservation, the place had lots of seats. We were out in an hour, even thought we... More

Le CHeval has been around quite a while, and there's a reason. It's like Oakland itself. Tasty, with lots of different flavors, colors and boisterous vitality. I always see someone I know personally or publicly there, and the food is really good. I hope they have bird's nest when I go again this weekend. If you're looking for a quiet... More

walked in w/o reservation and promptly seated; place was not busy; service was excellent. Well-made cocktail to start. Shrimp rolls had a lot of veggies and shrimp were tasteless. Orange chicken was also oddly flavorless - could see the orange, but, unless I a piece, no flavor. Rice was overcooked.
