Description: "I have the simplest of tastes, I only want the best." These words, compliments of Oscar Wilde, can be found over the kitchen door at Erna's Elderberry House Restaurant on the grounds of Chateau du Sureau. They seem to sum up the exquisite experience of dining at Erna's Elderberry House and the adjacent Chateau, where the vast culinary talents of Executive Chef Gunnar Thompson now reign supreme. The restaurant, with its European country-estate atmosphere, is divided into three lovely dining areas, each adorned with antique French provincial furnishings, magnificent tapestries and original oil paintings. A stately terrace with a commanding view of the Sierra Nevada Mountains adds to the fabulous ambiance.

Our party of four was considering a fast food chain when the Garmin GPS named among the food establishments , "Erna's Elderberry House"! We thought it sounded like a nice place and 2 hours later confirmed that it was a perfect accident! After the shock of the Price ($58) for lunch, we settled in and had wonderful food. 1. First... Expensive, but a wonderful dining experience. In the manner of great European restaurants, it's a price fix meal, with about 7 or 8 courses, all beautifully and deliciously prepared, for about $100 per person, plus tip and wine. Great wine list. They don't seem to advertise it, but if you are not that hungry, they do allow a 3-course dinner... More

We live in Napa and I had read about this Restaurant several years ago and waited to have dinner here. It turned out that we had family from Denmark visiting Yosemite, so this gave us our opportunity. It was everything I had heard and more. We opted for the wine pairing which gave us a chance to try wine that... More

We had brunch. While Erna's is expensive, it is such a worthwhile experience. For me, it was the perfect meal made up of small dishes. Eat, eat, as you won't ruin your appetite. I was very satisfied and enjoyed every bite. I can hardly wait to back for a dinner. Keep in mind you are served at a leisurely pace... More

My wife and I took a 3-day cooking class at Erna's Elderberry House. What a wonderful experience! Our class was small and we were able to integrate with the chef and the kitchen staff easily. We were hands-on on each dish of the day and learned many new techniques. What impressed us most was the high quality and insistence on... More

You know when you have had a truly great meal when at the end of your meal you ask your dinner partner what was the best part and you can't select one over another. That's what dinner was like on Valentines Day. Just can't find the words. We have been going to Erna's for quite some time and I am... More

We first spent a weekend at the Chateau about 15 years ago and we had several incredible dinners at the Elderberry House since then. It one of the finest meals anyone will find in California. It is truly a dining experience! Definitely worth the travel and while you are at it, stay at the Chateau!

What was once our exquisite, world-class dining experience...where we felt completely spoiled...has become 'good' food and close to sterile service. We used to know we could count on an incredible meal, doted on by the staff, and leisurely dining in it's gorgeous setting. Not the past two years. VERY disappointing. What happened?!??

See my review of the Chateau - this is truly world-class cuisine with a European ambiance, all at the gate to Yosemite in a small rural town. Even if you can't stay at the Chateau, it's worth the splurge to eat at Erna's.
