Tasty Seafood & Beachy Character in an Old Bank

This place is a Newport Beach institution. The restaurant owner (he calls himself the Flounder) famously refused to close the place for a private party for Richard Nixon. They are the only restaurant to keep their seafood in a bank vault--and it's valuable. Fresh, tasty and cooked in front of your... read more

We dropped by for lunch. It was about a 30 minute wait for a table, but once seated service was quick. Excellent bread, delicious halibut, tasty Garlic potatoes, and Cole slaw. Entrees about $15. Many lesser priced items. Good chowder too. I'd recommend it.

Went to this place based on the recommendation of the hotel staff. The chowder was good and the staff was very nice. I guess my expectations were a little high. In the end, I left with an empty wallet and the desire for more.

Tasty seafood. The shrimp cocktail is fantastic. The chowder is a red chowder, but didn't taste like a Manhattan style (my wife likes it, I thought it was OK). We both had crab this trip and it was perfect. Be prepared for a short wait and that the food will be served on paper plates with plastic flat ware and... More

Eating at the Crab Cooker is like going back in time to the days when every shoreline town had a place where all the locals could get great food at a modest price. Its "world's Best" Manhatten style clam chowder is aptly named, and when combined with a loaf of fisherman's bread just simply can't be beat. Be careful though... More

Loved the clam chowder and baked bread, the mussel appetizer was fantastic. This is a casual restaurant, not fine dining. Your wine arrives in a plastic glass, it's a little noisy but well worth it for a great meal at an inexpensive price compared to surrounding restaurants!

My husband had the crab cakes and he said they were very good. I ordered the king crab and they were amazing!! I have never had crab so tasty. Gave my husband a taste and his comment was "its as good as lobster" The coleslaw was ok, potatoes were good but the star was the crab leg. Definitely worth driving... More

Sure this historic restaurant has a reputation like no other in this country. (Google Crab Cooker and President Nixon.) But the wait staff is the reason I love this place. Irreverent yet über professional. They make this place what it has become...a must stop in the Newport Beach area. Only downside is the wait time that occurs every night. Better... More

Two words: Combination Plate. Shrimp, scallops, and choice cuts of fish on a skewer. Seasoned perfectly. Charcoal broiled. Melts in your mouth. We loved this place so much, we came back a second time and had the same thing! Loved the atmosphere too. Casual and laid-back without being a kitschy dive. Wait staff was one of the friendliest and helpful... More

This is a restaurant that has been in business for a while. You can eat in or get take out. The fish is really good, but it is a no frills place, you eat on paper plates. Try the clam chowder, it is great.
