When you are craving old school Chinese...

I love all kinds of Asian food but when growing up the only type available was the local Chinese - American diners. Now I prefer Thai or Vietnamese but every so often I get a hankering for old school Chinese...you know, egg foo young over white rice, sweet and sour pork etc. I find that Chong's... read more

My husband and I met friends for dinner at Chong's. (There were 8 of us) We were at a round table with a spinner in the middle; we each ordered a plate and shared all the food so we made our own buffet. The eggplant dish and the garlic shrimps were our favorites. Everything else needed soy sauce as it... More

Took family to this chinese place and was not disappointed. We ordered the dinner special that they add items for each person past two and the amount of food was astounding. Fried rice that was NOT greasy! Sweet and Sour port that was crisp and delicious. Soups was great. All enjoyed and we took home a lot of food for... More

We found the food to be very good and service quick and courteous. It is basic but it doesn't try to be anything it is not! The menus were very clear and the prices very economical. The portions were enormous, which would be OK if you wanted a doggy bag to take out, but for normal eating were too big.... More

Really the only major pluses are that it is right downtown, cheap by Monterey standards and service is quick. On the downside, the food is very so-so, tends to be standard items a little heavy on the side, oily side, old looking decor and noisy. Not really up to the level of good Chinese, but at these prices we are... More

Stopped in to Chong's today for a lunch special fix. For $5.95 you get a small cup of soup, and the entree with steamed rice. For a little extra you can get fried rice. It is really a great deal based on the amount of food you get for the price. They also have daily specials on the wall if... More

This is a casual place that is a locals favorite. It's not fancy and does not pretend to be. Just a great local place that has been doing well for many, many years. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

What we would do for some really good Chinese food here. This spot offers the usual bland Chinese American experience with standard dishes. The good part is that the price is cheap and it is in downtown Monterey. If you want really good Chinese food, keep looking.

Absolutely by far the worst Chinese I have ever tried to eat. Not knowing what to ordered we tried the chow mien. Paid m ran out the door. Tasteless. Beat up booths. Creppy. Dirty people at the bar... Homeless types. Yikes! Foodie beware.

Great taste and good service. They know what they are doing. Not fancy inside, but nice for Asian food. Try the General Chicken. That is my favoriate and you can't go wrong.
