The last time we were in Monterey, we missed out eating at Old Fisherman's Grotto so this trip, we made sure we got in. Boy, I don't know why! The clam chowder is really not that great. Where are the clams?! And there seems to be flour chunks - not very smooth. There is definitely much better chowder else where.... more

We had dinner here on a Valentine's Day. Very friendly, great atmosphere, and the food was great. We even tried a new wine and bought a bottle to take home based on the waiters recommendation. more

Everyone raves about the chowder, and it was good, but not that special. My husband was blinded the whole time because of the setting sun; he couldn't enjoy his meal. We live on the east coast and have some favorite seafood restaurants on the east coast (Warren's Lobster House in Kittery, Maine, Wharfside/Lobster Shanty in Pt. I am from the area and have been a grotto finantic for 12 years. About 6 months ago they changed the recipe for the clam chowder. It seems to have harder potato's and more of a potato flour taste. It is no longer the best:( Crabby Jim's now has the best tasting chowder, but a very tacky restaurant. My advice... more

I don't get to go here much but when I do, it is an experience I will never forget. It sits right on the water so no matter where you're sitting inside, you will have an amazing view of kayakers and ships. The clam chowder is the best in the state (the awards speak for it). I love Pear/ Gorgonzola salads and this is the best one I have ever had. Never had one with the pears poached. Great idea. Get this with some of the insane cream based clam chowder in a bread bowl and you have a meal you'll be dreaming about after. They also had great friendly service... more
