Cozy vibe, Great food, has outdoor fire pits.

Wondeful place with great food. Service was a bit off, as others mentioned. But besides that, the place has many private nooks, cozy atmosphere and worth checking out.

We went this past Friday expecting a quality dining experience with Jason Franey's new menu....and were not disappointed. We've been going to 'Stokes Adobe' since 1968 in all its past lives....The building dates to 1833---hence the current name. I'll get the negatives out of the way----the music should NEVER EVER be louder than the conversations going on...even after asking for... More

We had dined at 1833 several times before, and it was one of our favorite Monterey restaurants – so we were excited to try the new menu and went for dinner about a week after they introduced the changes. Bottom line: while our meal was good, there was nothing we found amazing about it, and in fact, we probably preferred... More

We had been to 1833 a couple of years ago and had a fairly good experience, but had heard they had a new chef and wanted to see if it had improved. The atmosphere/location is very quaint and inviting so that helps contribute to the overall experience, however, it was still disappointing. First, the menu on-line is not the menu... More

We arrived at 6:20pm and were immediately seated. Ordered drinks right away, and it took about 10-15 min for drinks. Ordered appetizer and mains. Had the artichoke purée appetizer, which was good. Hamachi, pork ribs, beef ribs and burger were all excellent. Waited 20 minutes for the hazelnut tart and strawberry shortcake dessert. Both were excellent. We were finally finished... More

We went to Restaurant 1833 on the recommendation of a friend who is a major foodie. He said it was his best meal of 2014, so that's pretty strong praise. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement. The atmosphere is wonderful. It's in an old house and my kids were especially excited to go when they heard it... More

We heard a lot of good things from friends about this place and that we simply had to try it the next time we were in Monterey. From our perspective this was just not all that impressive, perhaps the recently changed menu has something to do with it. If petite portions of complicated food only an erudite palate can fully... 1833 was recommended to us by a local and so glad we went! This is a tried and true local establishment, not a touristy destination. The thick adobe building was built in 1833 and there is quite a nice history behind it as well good ghost stories. We loved it for the atmosphere inside and out. There are two bars,... More

It is not a meal. It is an event. The restaurant is a trip to an alternate reality; a steampunk past of good test and historic decoration with incredible and interesting food and great cocktails. Each room is a narrative, and the whole house is a story. Each entree is out of this world, trendy, different. The service is amazing.... More

Delicious food, pricey, but a great romantic place for dinner with an interesting backstory of ghosts and an original owner who defected from the navy and kept up a charade of being a doctor, putting his patients at mortal risk. The rooms are dark and moody, comfortable chairs and a very pleasant atmosphere. The bar has a counter where you... More
