Excellent Fish & Chips - and Beer of Course

I've tried fish and chips in many places on the Monterey Peninsula and English Ales is my favorite. Be warned, however, that the portion is huge (3 big fillets plus lots of thick cut chips). I've also had their banger/fish & chips platter and it easily feeds 2. The beers are great -- I favor the... read more

Went there for dinner around 830 pm. There was no wait to be seated, but it took a long time to get waited on. Our drink order came quickly and the beer was very good. It took a really long time to get our food ( more than 40 minutes.) The fish and chips was delicious and was a large... More

This place is awesome. The beer is English style, not a whole lot of carbonation to interfere with the excellent taste. The food is good pub food and reasonably priced. It's a great local bar with a lot character and friendliness. Must place to go while in the Marina area. Especially if you like good beer.

English Ales is great for lunch. Their brews are excellent. Be sure to try the taster ales. There really is enough in the flight to share.

20 minutes to get in a drink order for our party of 6 and 2 kids, I went to the bar to place the order and the bartender, I believe he is the restaurant owner, told me I would have to wait and asked why the server had not taken the order. The server had 36 people in the restaurant... More

It is a small place with warm and welcoming environment. The fish and chips is good, and beer is great. A good place to chill after a hard day of work or for a fun date night.

The fare is English pub, the fish and chips are pretty good, Beer battered cod, crispy and not over cooked. The chips are large steak fries done well. The reel gems are the beers, a small selection of nice beers from light to dark, all great.

Came in and rather than beig greeted by the owner/worker he squeezed by us and motioned for us to sit. As we were giving our drink order; I paused briefly and he walked away and took the order of the table next to us. We had to ask for menus and then get up to get them ourselves... Menu didn't... Cute little restaurant off the main road. Definitely grab a beer while you're there--it's a brewery, after all! The room is well-decorated with British memorabilia, and the ceiling is filled with loyal customer's mugs. As for food, they have the usual pub fare: calamari, fish and chips, sandwiches. We really liked the steak cut fries and the calamari strips. The... More
