Excellent French Food in the East Bay

What a pleasant surprise. Despite living in the east bay for years yet had yet to visit this terrific little restaurant. The steak tartar is excellent, prepared table side. Unique and special is the squash blossom beignet appetizer; truly visually impressive and a real treat. Main courses... read more

One food server, one person in the kitchen makes for very slow dining experience as in 2 1/2 hours. French onion soup was poor, consisting of weak broth. Portions small but adequate. Poor service simply because one food server could not adequately assist the number of patrons in the restaurant. When spending around $100 pp, expect far better quality, preparation... More

Restaurant is very small, poorly decorated, a lot of table are in the back yard along the fence with some bees flying above your head. The staff is very friendly, famous Philippe Chevalier greets customers, and charms you with a smile. The prices are for wealthy people. Some specials-like filet minion with tax and gratuities costs around $85.00, tomato salad... More

This is an upscale French restaurant. The food is tasty. The people who work here are top notch. If you're willing to pay the high price it is a lovely place for a night out.

This was our second time at Chevalier, and was as good as the first time. We celebrated a birthday with a group of nine. Service and food were excellent. It is pricey but you get a very memorable experience.

The food here was good and the service was not too bad. I think the wine list is ok, but a bit overpriced as are the cocktails. The prix fix menu delivered a nice sampling of flavors. Generally quiet, however one table near us got real loud and kind of spoiled the atmosphere for a short while. Definitely a place... More

I have never been in this restaurant and decided to have dinner here with a few close friends on a Wednesday night. I started with the Potato Leek Soup which was flavorful and excellent. Then we shared the Escargots de Bourgogne which was Burgundy snails in shell with butter, parsley & garlic!. Delicious. My main course was an outstanding Beef... More

The reviews on Chevalier have been mixed so I have held off reviewing until I had tried it at least three times. Third time was last week and the food was terrific. That's consistent with visits number one and two so I am going with five stars. Yes, the menu does not change a lot, and yes it is relatively... More

I have lived in Lafayette CA for over 17 years and have watched as Lafayette has attracted more and more restaurants serving more sophisticated palates. Chevailer is at the top of the list when it comes to fine dining in Lafayette. Chevalier has become a popular local restaurants for special occasions. It is pricey but worth the price to have...
