Truly terrific

The reviews on Chevalier have been mixed so I have held off reviewing until I had tried it at least three times. Third time was last week and the food was terrific. That's consistent with visits number one and two so I am going with five stars. Yes, the menu does not change a lot, and yes it... read more

I have lived in Lafayette CA for over 17 years and have watched as Lafayette has attracted more and more restaurants serving more sophisticated palates. Chevailer is at the top of the list when it comes to fine dining in Lafayette. Chevalier has become a popular local restaurants for special occasions. It is pricey but worth the price to have... My husband and I went there for dinner again last night. We went there mainly for the August special witch was the frog legs. It was great. I had French onion soup and the frog legs. That was plenty for me. My husband had the chicken dish. He said it was delicious. For sure when ever we think of French... More

We have been trying to feel the love since they opened many years ago. How he wins any critical or Michelin recognition is a mystery to us. The menu remains heavy and meat oriented, no noticeable homage a Ete (summer!) This time we started with stuffed squash blossoms (not crispy) had a black bass (pretty sure it wasn't - looked... We had a very enjoyable dinner at Chevalier. It was a beautiful evening so we dined outside. Service was attentive and was paced nicely. We had the 3 course prix fixe menu. Everything was well prepared and delicious, including the Wild King Salmon. This restaurant is a nice little gem in Lafayette!

Genuine French. Plan on spending 3 hours for dinner, with plenty of time for conversation before the food arrives. The place is pleasant, reasonably quiet, rather sedate. Prices are up-scale: all but the one vegetarian main course is priced at $34 or above. The three course prix fix menu at $39.- is a relative bargain. The food: the snails were... More

Having dined there several times I have found that it is a very nice place. Phillipe is charming and loves his work and it shows. The outside dining is pleasant but the space is cramped. When it is wonderful, it is totally so. When off....! Not so much with the food but with the service which tends to be aloof... More

If you want a top quality french meal and live in the East Bay, Chevalier is your best bet. The entire meal was first rate. We both had the rack of lamb..cooked to perfection with a great sauce and perfect side dishes. Excellent wine list too. It's pricey but worth the cost for a special meal.

We relied on Tripadvisor to find a restaurant in the East Bay and I want to thank all the previous reviewers for their excellent advice! The soup, the salad, the entrees, the desserts, the bread--each dish was fabulous. Well worth a trip to Lafayette.

Despite the odd trapezoidal dinning room, the inspired yet traditional French food that emerges from the kitchen is excellent. The home-made country pate is simply the best I've had in the US. Wines are reasonable & delicious and are served by friendly and well informed staff. A very good find.
