1st Russian Food Experience: Check & Good!

This was the first time my wife and I had Russian food. It was a good experience and good food. We had the dumplings, beef stroganoff and walnut cake. The ambience felt you were at relatives' house-kitchen. Attentive service and calm music for dinning.

My wife and I ate here last week, we shared an eggplant salad which was tasty and easily 4 times the size the waitress had indicated. Each of us had a bowl of borsht. Thank goodness we did not order an entre as we were not able to finish what we were served. I found the food tasty, the service... More

Visited on a rainy night, so the warm food hit the spot. However we waited a few minutes to be seated before finally sitting ourselves down, with the waitress in full view in the back on her cell

We have to keep this place in business! Tucked away in La Mesa strip mall is a little gem that I never would have tried, were it not for an adventurous friend. It truly felt like dining in someone's home. The food and the service were excellent, but so personal. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, to the point that the four... More

Well.... This was not the same restaurant I remember visiting 3 years ago. The decor was exactly the same, it looked very dusty and dirty and the service was even worse than our first visit. Let me just start by saying that my wife is Ukrainian, and we just returned from a 17 day trip to Ukraine a few weeks... More

We found this restaurant here on tripadvisor and decided to try it out. It is outstanding. It is a tiny place, with good service - there was only one waitress working, but she does her best to keep up with everything when it gets busy. There are many choices on the menu, but it is not overwhelming. We had beet... More

While in the area we decided to be bold and try Ukrainian-Russian food and the Village House Kalina did NOT disappoint! The service was very good. If you have any questions on the menu or items be sure to ask. They will help and not judge you for not understanding. The food is amazing!! Vegetarians you can enjoy a vegetable... More

It is hard to find any Ukrainian food in San Diego, let alone good, authentic dishes. This restaurant is a lot more Russian than Ukrainian, but the similarities are close enough and the food is amazing! I've taken friends there for Ukrainian Christmas the last few years, so that they can "taste the food of my ancestors". I've also recommended... More

Five family members met for a late lunch at the Village House on Cinco de Mayo of all days! My husband had scouted out its location since it is somewhat off the beaten track. But what a find! As my daughter-in-law kept saying, "It's like being in someone's home!" We started with the salad sampler which included six different salads;... More

We just found this tiny restaurant tucked inside a small shopping center. They do not have a liquor license, but you can bring your own in with no corkage fee. That being said, they do carry an interesting variety of nonalcoholic drinks. We tried the pear soda which is light and refreshing, and not too sweet like American sodas. We... More
