Alfonso's has been in La Jolla for 30 something years. I've gone numerous times over that span and it has been consistently great. The chips and salsa are delicious ("don't fill up on chips") and the atmosphere always feels like a special occasion or a vacation.

We were looking for a spot where we could have a large group that would be laid back. We found the perfect spot. The meals were very good, and brought out promptly after ordering. The carne asada was recommended, and we enjoyed several plates with it served different ways. The margaritas were really really good. We did have Alfonso himself... More

Nice restaurant ... A bit over priced but the food was good and relatively authentic. Good margaritas.

The food at this shop was OK. The seating could have been a lot better. I was surprised to see the plastic/resin chair for the semi outdoor (veranda) seating. The service was great, but the food could have been better. If i could, i would add a half point for the salsa they offered with the chip, which was fresh... More

What I liked about Alfonso's is that it's a lively enough place to hang out with friends, while still being family friendly. We were seated in the back part of the restaurant which was nice, but I'll never understand why they ruined that part of their dining room with a TV. If you are looking for some typical Mexican dishes,... More

We dined at Alfonso's yesterday evening and could not fault any aspect of this fine Mexican Restaurant. The owner, Alfonso, a gentleman in his senior years personally greeted us and made a point to shake our hands as we were leaving. Service was outstanding with friendly waiters and fast service. Very fine quality Margaritas, in fact my husband had two... More

When we lived in the area, we used to visit Alfonso's regularly and it was consistently one of the better Mexican restaurants in San Diego. Granted, it has been a few years since we've been back as we moved away, but now the restaurant seems old and tired. For instance, the carne asada was always juicy and flavorful. While it... More

Took 5 kids- super spicy salsa, poor service, dirty restaurant, and food below average. I would never go back. Rude staff.

1971!!!!! I remember because that is when I got married at 18 and it was our honeymoon and Alfonso's was our first place we ate at. We live here and it is a staple with us!!!! The waitstaff remember us and the owners and it is a family run buisness! I love their seafood dinners and love the shrimp!!!! Watch... More
