I did a residency at Oaknoll Navy Hospital in the early 80's. I lived near CSU-Hayward and ventured down the big hill to La Imperial more times than my waistline could count. It was dependably great food and a fun atmosphere. Sugical-suite clean? Maybe not, but so it goes. I live in the midwest now, but go back to the... More

I always judge a mexican restaurants by their chili colorado (beef). La Imperieal has the best I have ever tasted and I love Mexican food. Their food is like homemade and delicious. Huge portions and cheap prices make this my favorite Tex-Mex restaurant in Calif.

Don't trust their cleanliness (or lack of). Food is o.k. Good for "gringos" who don't know the diff. Tried it twice. Didn't like either time.

You know, I ate here about 25 years ago & had bad experience. Decided to try again almost on a dare..... Should have continued my streak. If you dare, check it out, but take a peek at kitchen conditions your "chef" is working in. I almost list it right there.....

La Imperial is now managed by the youngest son, Martin, who has decided to put a new spin on the restaurant. Every day of the week there are now specials, and beer deals. Tuesday's are now Taco Tuesdays, so all chicken, beef and pork taco's are $2/each ala carte, and tonight there was $2 Tacate's. We left full and happy... More

I moved to the Bay Area almost 14 years ago. When I was getting ready to relocate from So Cal, a friend told me about this place (he attended Cal State Hayward years earlier) so I made a point to check it out after I moved up. It is excellent. I've turned many a friend on to it and we... More

Like the last reviewer, I first encountered La Imperial about 30 years ago (when there was a Mexican supermarket in the front half of the restaurant). Though I have moved around the world, whenever I come back to the Bay Area I pop in for some real California-Mexican food. I've introduced many friends and guests to it over the years... More

I started dining here when we moved to Northern California 37 years ago. I've watched the family that owns and operates it grow and the building that houses it change. But the food and friendly environment has never changed. It is marvelous. Over the years I've taken dozens of friends and visitors here. Each one has become addicted to the... More

The Chicken Quesadilla I had was wonderful. The homemade salsa was very good along with the corn tortillas chips. I enjoyed the family atmosphere. I will defiantly go back again the next time I am in town!

Food taste just like my grandparent's would cook, especially the machaca. Family owned, and after you've been a few times, you're treated just like family too! I've taken many a person there who are visiting from out of town, and when they come back to visit, off we go to this authenic restaurant.
