Description: Experience California-bistro dining in a place reminiscent of San...
Experience California-bistro dining in a place reminiscent of San Francisco, where the cuisine is accessible and the service is humble - not unlike Max's beginnings. In June of 1997 Scott Stanley opened Max's Market and Bakery (named after his son) on the corner of Bullard and West in Fresno. The cafe featured gourmet foods and sandwiches made daily with freshly baked, all-natural artisan bread handcrafted using old world methods. Max's Bistro and Bar is more than quality cuisine and service - it's comfortable. You know it by the three generations of Fresnans who each sit at their favorite table. You can hear it in the laughter that erupts between server and guest as it carries across the room. And you can see it on the face of head chef Scott Sauer as he looks out his tiny kitchen window into a crowd of familiar faces who have become part of the Max's family. Max's is comfortable. It's never about ego - but relationships. It's not about pretense - but culinary creativity. Every dish, every time, is crafted from the ground up and bursting with creativity - consistently prepared with the freshest of ingredients, and best of ingredients that can be found locally. The aromas fill the restaurant as the martini and wine bar serves up a variety of hand-shaken martinis along with an extensive offering of wines by the glass or bottle. As seasons change, so will the fresh fish and produce delivered each morning defining Max's seafood special for the day. From day-boat scallops harvested fresh to the center cut of a filet where size and shape are exacted by hand, we promise a unique dining experience.

Goof

My filet mignon was cooked perfectly. The menu has a good variety and the food was great. Atmosphere is good. There's is a parking lot but it was very busy and I had to drive around to find a parking spot.

Great decor, atmosphere and menu. I had Phad Thai and my wife had Scallops. Both delish. Menu is expensive but we enjoyed everything. Staff was fast, pleasant and efficient. Explained all daily specials. Good wine selection on menu and in expansive wine cellar

I live pretty close to Max's and love it. It is certainly not the best restaurant in the world, but probably one of the best in Fresno. It always maintains a great evening environment and continues to consistently serve delicious fine dining food at a moderate price.

I have eaten at Max's for years and I have always thought of it as solid go to place. My last three meals there were very very mediocre. My last meal was a business lunch and it took over an hour to order, eat and get the check, way too long for a business lunch. They were not very business... More

I can say only good things about Max's food, service and surroundings - all upscale. That is reflected in the price of the dinners but not out of line for the quality of the food they serve. The wine selection, my companions have told me, is excellent. Max's bread is sold in a number of stores in town but, in... More

After helping our daughter move to Fresno for her residency, we followed a friend's recommendation to celebrate her birthday at Max's Bistro. Kobe meatloaf is not your mother's meatloaf! It is so much better! Tuscan Kale salad could be a meal on its own. Every bite was delicious as were the cocktails. And the service was excellent from start to... More

We usually are pleased with Max's but not last Friday night. I ordered the prime rib special, specifically told waitress I wanted it with "no blood" and she said medium would be the best. Steak arrived quite bloody, barely cooked on edges. Could not find waitress to have meat cooked more, we finally had to get up and find her.... More

Called to confirm reservations that were made a week before for my daughters prom. Only to find out they had no record. The manager goes on to accuse me of not making the reservation. He didn't even apologize or sympathize with situation just played the blame game. Definitely won't go there

Amazing decor with a metalalized, industrial art! Unexpected service going above and beyond for the perfect glass of red. Highly recommend scallops, meatloaf and delicious extra virgin olive oil for dipping homemade crusty sourdough bread. Warm colors compliment the warm service.

I was recommended this place by a bartender in another restaurant. I looked them up on line and found it to be even better than I expected. While they are known for their seafood dishes there is something for everyone. I had the Kobe Beef Meatloaf (Kobe Beef, Shortrib & Pork Meatloaf, Caramelized Ketchup and Applewood Smoked Bacon Glaze served... More
