Hidden among the never-ending strip malls of the El Camino Real well north of San Diego, the Firefly turned out to be a delightful spot. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable, the staff helpful and friendly. Our server was quite knowledgeable about the extensive list and inventory of wine. The menu was varied and included some creative entrees, such as... More

After having a very good (not great) experience on Wed. 22 Jan., during SD Restaurant Week (RW), my wife and I had high expectations. (Actually, we did not have the RW menu items, but ordered a la carte.) I recorded a very favorable evaluation on TA then. But what a difference this time around! I went back for dinner on... More

A friend and thought we would give Firefly a try during Restaurant Week. Unfortunately, everything about Firefly was disappointing. The decor is at once modern and hip, with hammered copper fixtures and warmly painted walls, and dated and tacky, with layered tablecloths and plastic diner-style salt and pepper shakers. Weirdly, each table was decorated with a single somewhat wilted rose... More

I would rate our dining experience here as Very Good+. This place is surprisingly well laid out inside for comfort and a warm feel. Also, double tablecloth service! Noise was at a low level. The food was VERY inventive for a restaurant of this type, basically a neighborhood gem as opposed to a haute cuisine establishment. My wife started with... More

The restaurant accommodated a request. The ambience is great. The service spot on. And the food, wow 2 of us had the short rib, amazing. The other had the Wild Boar, delicious and tender, and great flavor. This restaurant a keeper. Will be back often, our office is just up the street.

We did not enjoy our meal. The food was greasy and highly over cooked and over salted. Wine was excellent but the sticky menu and dirty flower vases got us off to a bad start. We'd have left right then but every other restaurant was fully booked so we stuck it out. We ought to have realized there was good... More

We have eaten here about half a dozen times now. The food is consistently good. The service is nice and friendly and knowledgeable. The menu is limited but it's good for a variety of tastes. They are kid friendly and will make kids off-menu items that appeal to them. I'd give this place a try if I were you! You... More

This review is based on two dinners this week with my wife and two different couples. Overall both evenings were very nice. Entrees receiving high marks are the flat-iron steak, seafood cataplana and short ribs. The cassoulet was not traditionally prepared and judged to be too dry. Salads and desserts were tasty. The fixed prix menu is a very good... More

Jim runs a gourmet restaurant that does not act like it. Everything we have ever had here has been excellent. You can make a meal of the hors d'oevres, you can share main courses and you should try the theme nights when he has wine pairings. Without a doubt an underrated gem. Sometimes a bit pricey but not always.

We stopped at the Firefly for a light dinner. We were seated in the restaurant and given menus and we felt after checking out the offerings, that we didn't want quite as much food, although the set menu with wines was appealing. We got up to leave and the hostess asked us if we would prefer the small plates which... More
