Learned abput Gen Kai through the St. Regis staff. I asked a few of them who were working at different departments pf the hotels is they knew the best Japanese restaurant in the area is. All of these peeps suggested Gen Kai. So I thought...sounds good looks like the locals like this restaurant. First of, there was quite a wait... More

Food was terrible, poor quality, not fresh, left most of the food on the table, paid bill, and went back to hotel, ordered a pizza. Made my family want to get sick.

Went here based upon the excellent reviews. The sushi was VERY fresh and quite good. The service was lacking but thats OK. The bill was cheap (for CA) and I'd go back for sure.

We enjoyed first the Robert's Roll, then a "local" sat down and immediately started being served his "regular meal" which at first I thought he was joking...it's not on the menu, it's called a "Happy Meal"! Only available for lunch or during the week for dinner, it's truly going to satisfy your heart! Miso soup, and sushi, sashimi pieces to... More

Sit at the sushi bar close to Yoshi, He is a sushi artist. The food is amazing. Get there early, they get very busy and the line goes out the door.

Met a local that raved about this place. An out of towner like our selves would have never noticed this place. So this place was probably packed with locals. Got there at 1:45PM and our local got stuck in traffic (what else is new,) Was told that we needed to get our order in by 2 PM as the kitchen... More

We were staying in Carlsbad and drove up to Dana Point for lunch. I had read a review on this place and decided to try it. I had the sushi/sashimi lunch and my wife had a tempura dish. We're from Las Vegas and have eaten at the best Sushi restaurants there, but this was as good as we've had and... More

We have been in Japan. Eating at Gen Kai is like a quick trip to Japan. The food is fabulous. The boat will feed four people easily. If you want to eat at the sushi bar, get there early, it fills up fast. We got there as it opened and there was a long line. Most of the people went... More

Just visited on a recent trip to the area. The low points first: not the best kid options (the kids version of the teriyaki chicken was somewhat not as good as the grown up one), and the sushi rolls are OK. The high points: the Sashimi is fantastic! In fairness the sushi rolls only felt 'ok' because they were eaten... More

Bit of a hidden gem in the Dana Point area. We didn't book and waited about 30mins for a table, restaurant seems popular with locals. Had a great assortment of food, excellent sashimi, shrimp tempura and some spectacular speciality rolls. Good atmosphere, delicious food and lots of fun. Highly recommend!
