Funky place in quriky town--worth a detour from Pomona!

We were in Pomona for a show at the Fairplex, and the clerk at the hotel desk recommended a short (15 min) drive to Claremont and the Back Abbey. Claremont is a great funky little town with lots of great old architecture, unique little shops, etc. The Back Abbey really personified the quirkiness... read more

Our second visit confirmed the excellence of their many Belgian beers on tap (with the correct glasses), combined with food that's as good as any restaurant. I highly recommend the duck-fat fries (the half order is enough for two people), charcuterie plate, mussels, and the burger. Something about the light, loose texture of the grind when paired with a brioche... More

Could eat delicious food outside for lunch. Need to get there early as it is very popular. The steamed mussels in wine were great.

My wife and son had lunch at Back Abbey and liked the soup. Although my wife did not especially like the sausage sandwich, I decided to try this restaurant. I had to concur with my wife that the food was not good. I ordered the plain hamburger which was not to my taste. The side salad only was offered with... More

Offers a delicious charcuterie platter which we paired with excellent duck fat fries. An incredible selection of predominantly Belgian beers on tap. We will be back.

Love this place. They have a ton of beers on tap and simple but delicious food (think French fries fried in duck fat served with several dipping sauces). I like the basic but delicious bar menu and service is always good. My only complaint is that it is always busy but that's because it's good (and small but I don't... More

A cool place with a hipster beer aficionado vibe, Belgian-style. A solid beer selection that I appreciated. I started with the crab cakes which were mediocre. Too much horseradish. I followed with a burger which was on the upper-end in terms of quality. The stand-out was the fries. These were some of the best pomme frites I have ever eaten,... More

The Red Monk Burger is a fantastic and unique burger. You can tell they have taken a lot of care in perfecting this burger by choosing the best toppings and highest quality ingredients to make a stellar combination. The atmosphere of the restaurant (gastropub) is also really fun. There is not a lot of seating but this is not your... More

Really enjoyed this place. They have a huge selection of beers, so I told the server what kind of flavor I was looking for, and he delivered perfectly for three different choices. I only ate a pretzel, but the menu is tempting and everything my friends ate looked great. Cozy ambiance, and they even have blankets available for cold nights... More
