Still going strong after all these years

Nothing pretentious about this place as it is all about the food. This place just refuses to disappoint! I've been coming here since 1983 and each time I come I wonder where this ranks in my pantheon of best steaks. The seasoning perfect, char perfect, cooked as I asked. I think this is the best place to get the Santa Maria steakhouse experience. It is remote and takes a little effort to get to, but it is a uniquely California experience.

Man this place is so good. We hear about it so we went for a drive from Pismo about 20 mins, The artichoke appetizer is so good. We had the bone in ribeye steak best around

This is the one we recommend to ALL of our friends. Reservations are a must - we've been burned too many times without one. Nice drive through the hills for us, into a quaint, one road town. Charming gardens and pond in the back - don't forget to go take a look while you're waiting for your table. (There always... More

This is the original Hitching Post. Nothing fancy in Casmalia, a former cow town near Santa Maria. Our friend who lives in the area said best steak in the central coast (or anywhere for that matter). This was probably the best tasting steak I've ever had. It's only open for dinner and reservations are necessary as it is literally the... More

This place is known for its steaks and it doesn't disappoint. It's pretty far out of the way, but worth the drive. The service is the best of any of the local steak houses. As should be expected on the Central Coast (but not always the case), they have a nice selection of wines, many of them local. The only... More

Funny place, out in the middle of know where. Great "old style" steakhouse. Fantastic steaks, salads, potatoes, everything you could want from a place. Definitely on my return list!

This is the original Hitching Post (not the newer one from Sideways the movie). It's in one of the stranger towns I've ever been too seemingly in the middle of nowhere, off the 1, north of Orcutt - just a cluster of homes with an odd vibe, like a lot went down here over the years.....the Post is truly fab,... My husbands favorite place to go, but I like it just as much. We always get the filet and it's always cooked just the way we like it. I like that they have a 5 ounce filet which is just the right size for me. Very casual place. Service is usually fast and attentive. You get relish tray, shrimp cocktail(tiny shrimp... More

Although the atmosphere is nothing more than a "family room for the extended family", the food is always generous and perfectly grilled. My family gathers in Santa Maria for all holidays as our parents still live there even though none of us siblings do. Saturday evenings always are centered on dinner at the Hitching Post & great memories are made... More
