Nihonryori

A fantastic restaurant specializing in sushi and sashimi, but also serving other very good dishes. It is fairly traditional: its small, with half of the seats at the bar (22 seats in total). Relaxed atmosphere. The sushi chef is top notch and all of the fish is prepared when ordered (the fish is... read more

I am a very long time sushi person. Plus / minus / neutral on Akaoni. Plus: Chef is very knowledgeable and takes great time / pride in his creations. They offer specialty creations other than standard sashimi and sushi that I have never experienced. I plan to return to try every one of these items and I suggest you do... More

Delish! This tiny restaurant does an outstanding job of producing great sushi. We started with the house salad, large enough to share, which was very fresh and perfectly dressed. We then had the 12 Nigri, chef's choice, with a tuna roll. We added two more eel for me and a spicy tuna roll for my husband. Might be the best... More

We really liked this place. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere amiable. The food was very good and the price reasonable (not cheap) for what you get. We ended coming twice during a short break.

Akaoni's attitude seems to be: if I don't seem to be like you, no room for you. The temperature in this little hole in the wall is below freezing. It is questionable if discrimination is part of the service. How do offer a table to one group and not another group earlier, both without reservations? Would some professional smile and... More

There are some reviews here criticizing the owners of Akaoni. We can't dispute their experiences, we can only tell you they were perfectly delightful to us. Perhaps a bit reserved, but hardly unfriendly, the wife, who served us, was pleasant and accommodating. The owner/chef wasn't all smiles, but he was IN THE ZONE, preparing every dish for every customer with... More

Having been to Akaoni for a 2nd time now, I wanted to review and tell everybody what a find in Carmel this is. The Chef is a very skilled professional and the seafood is fresh. It's a clean, cozy, and tiny restaurant that makes you feel like you're his special guest. I highly recommend Akaoni for a wonderful meal and... More

We only happened upon this restaurant because the original sushi place we were looking for was closed. However we were very pleasantly surprised. The ingredients were fresh and the sushi arrived at our table promptly. Additionally the portions were very generous. It was a very nice lunch!

Finally made it here. Reservations are recommended. Having tried the competition, IMHO the sushi at Akaoni is the best in Carmel. The place is also bright enough so you can see what you are eating and can also see how spotless the place is. And though the place is small, it did not feel crowded. The menu is simple, focusing... A very accomplished chef who serves sublime sashimi and sushi. The tempura special and yuzu black cod were also exceptional. Rather utilitarian decor but the service is excellent and very friendly. Highly recommend this restaurant . Not cheap but you get your money's worth.
