The sashimi was fresh, well-prepared and nicely presented. Service was good, the restaurant is plain but nice. It is all about good food.

Another wonderful dining experience at what is certainly the most authentic sushi restaurant in the area and just maybe on this side of the Pacific. Reservations a must (seats 25 and is popular). Check the specials whiteboard behind the prep. counter, and don't miss the Salted Mackerel as a follow-up to your sushi or sashimi. We felt that we could... More

My wife and I were fortunate to have 2 Carmel friends take us to Akaoni for a REAL sushi experience; for sure it is that! We were warmly greeted at this cozy and squeaky clean location and our evening went uphill from there. There are SO many options on the menu and the chef is flexible in adding choices as... More

This little side street restaurant offers classic Japanese cuisine. It was recommended to us for lunch by one of our favorite innkeepers and we found the Bento box very fresh and an incredible value. The inside of the restaurant is very clean and simple as they are following in the true Japanese culture. If you expect a warm and cozy... More

This place gets a lot of bad reviews on Yelp for the friendliness of the staff. Let me say this. If you want to go to Bennihana's and have a show and overly caffeinated too-perky wait staff, go for it. What you have here is a very traditional sushi place where all of the time, effort, and energy is put... More

We previously dined here 3 years ago and were very impressed and anxious to return on this trip. We did and were certainly not disappointed. Menu is extensive; Asahi Black beer very cold and delicious. Our dinner choices included a bento box and a soft shell crab and seafood pot. All were excellent with the soft shell crab one of... Although I am not a big fan of sushi, this restaurant stands heads and shoulders above any other restaurant of it's type in the area. The owner and sushi chef is actually a certified sushi chef who apprenticed in Japan for 10 years. His options include local and imported from Japan. He also prepares cooked fresh items that are almost... More

We were visiting Carmel for the Porsche Parade and decided to try this place. We were pleasantly surprised with fresh sushi, attentive service, delicious tempura and salted mackerel. It is a small but very clean place and the single lady who waits on all the tables and sushi bar was very good. I had a bento box that had a... More

We were recommended this place as the chef owner is apparently world class. My wife and I booked and sat down to an efficient service and no more or less than I expected. The Blue Fin Tuna sashimi was so fresh and a beautiful colour, the last time I saw such good looking tuna was at Nobu London. Good miso... More

No frills restaurant. I'm sitting here now with my tail between my legs. I ordered a $22 live sea urchin and they brought it out from behind the curtain and it was definitely not live. Ok so chef and I had this argument because I said an urchin has 5 pieces and he kept saying 7. He brought out the... More
