ESTABLISHED IN 1988When we opened Allegro Gourmet Pizzeria in the summer of 1988, we did so for selfish reasons. We craved an authentic Italian experience on the Monterey Peninsula. The days of pizzerias with sawdust covered floors on lower Alvarado Street were gone. As the small fishing village known as Monterey slowly disappeared so did its soul.A few small restaurants still had some of that old feeling but they did not have the food our more traveled palates were beginning to expect. Some had, great food and a great feeling, but were too expensive or trendy to be called “local spots”. We needed a place to go to – a little “tucked away” spot to discuss life, enjoy good food, family and friends…. and still be able to pay our bills on time.So in July of 1988 we set out to capture that elusive dream; the soulful pizzeria that exists in every Italian neighborhood. No big deal, just great food, friends and wine. The kind of place that your feet take you to when your mind is not paying attention. And when you get inside, it feels good…like you are home.Allegro is a place where you can satisfy your Italian soul. Simple, healthy, delicious & unpretentious. Welcome to our little part of Italy. We hope you enjoy your stay . Nina & Jeano

Best Meatballs in Town

As a local I come here quite often to eat. When my son was younger, we loved their make your own pizza, that came with a little paper chef hat. Lately we love their meatballs. The reason I gave only three points is that any time we decide to eat there lately there is something that bothers us... read more

We were looking for some nice dining around Carmel and were certain we've struck gold when we saw the sign pointing to 'Allegro GOURMET Pizzeria'. In theory, what could be better than some great pizza around beautiful Carmel? Alas, in practice, we got something slightly different. Let's start, naturally enough, with starters. We ordered the SMALL garlic bread – only... More

This is a wonderful beginning for your new career as a fiction writer. Why didn't you just ask for a free meal? My guarantee is on a sign at the front door, on the menu and on the guest check. So much easier for everyone...you writing, me writing, everyone reading. Ugh! So many words, so little time. Anyway, since you... More

My husband, child & I came across this place & wanted to try a new place & we regret that tremendously!! It took 20 min to come take our order, I ordered the chicken pesto & half barbeque chicken & the chicken taste horrible like it was frozen not fresh, the artichokes had a strong pickled taste like they came straight... I'm very sorry to hear about your recent experience at allegro. I am happy to provide a refund for your meals as stated on your receipt. That is how we have managed to remain open for 27 years. Sometimes we make mistakes. When we do I don't expect you to pay. I assume you were in last night ( my... More

The crust was blah, having little taste and mediocre texture. The anchovies must have come out of a can that had been open for awhile - the only taste was salt. The capers were small and dark making me wonder how long that jar had been open or how inexpensive they were. The only thing good was the bottle of... More

Sorry to disappoint you. We typically go through a case of anchovies a week. Same with capers. Both from "Roland" which is a high quality brand. Crust has no flavoring except aging ( three days) and salt. Our cheese and tomato sauce are both the highest quality obtainable and are twice the cost of most on the market. For the... More

Visited this 'gourmet' pizzeria based on the reviews and the convenient location, expecting top-notch pizzas. We tried the chicken pesto pizza, after a long wait (understandably since they are made to order, but it seemed longer than normal) the pizza we received tasted terrible...it had almost no pesto sauce and a strange bacon aftertaste. When requesting the check we had... More

Allegro is tucked away in the Barnyard so its not a place you spot right away. We were looking for a place to eat fairly late one evening and most of the restaurants were already closed. We stopped by Allegros and even though it was 20 minutes to closing they invited us in and were very friendly and welcoming. To... More

Gluten Free and regular Pizza's Pasta and much more. Priced well and always made to order, the crust is fabulous and all ingredients are freshly prepared. A local favorite with indoor and outdoor seating. Take out available and look out for special deals.

This is a really buzzy restaurant, packed with locals who have clearly worked out that this place offers good service and food and a great atmosphere. Very enjoyable and will be back!

Several years ago I had a bad experience (unreasonable wait time) at Allegro and posted a negative review. The owner wrote back explaining the issue and urged me to try them again. We've been coming to Carmel more frequently and Allegro has become our go to place for take out pizza. The pizza is very good and they are meeting... More

We walked in only 20 min before their closing time, but the wait staff was very friendly. Their kids menu has a ''make your own pizza" which my 5 year old loved. They also brought her a ball of dough to play with, which was very cool. In a town where many restaurants appeared non-kid-friendly, this place was great, and... More
