As a general rule, I avoid chains when on vacation. I prefer a more local experience. However, Il Fornaio offered an unbeatable deal in combination with my hotel, so I gave it a try. I was very happy. Despite the chain name, the restaurant was cozy and friendly and felt "local". The staff was very friendly and helpful in making... More

Under the canopy beneath the beautiful round skylight, Carmelites frequently meet for coffee and pastries to talk, or they come alone to read the paper or noodle on their laptops. The atmosphere is always convivial. And for those who want a serious lunch or dinner, there's the main dinging room on the other side of the very large bar area,... More

Happened upon Il Fornaio whilst walking the neighbourhood and were so pleased we ventured in. For starters there is a welcoming feel to the place and it was a joy to behold table spacing that would allow for private conversations. The menu was extensive and well supported by a wide variety of wine choices. We rated this meal one if... More

Apart from nice ambiance and great, yet unobtrusive and unpretentious service, the food prepared was a perfect reminder of my time in Italy. I had delicious fettucini with mushrooms in olive oil.. Thank you!

For a supposedly traditional Italian restaurant, the meals were simply average. The pasta was decent but the sauces and toppings were only average.

We were wandering in Carmel looking for a bakery when a local told us that she smells il Fornaio baking every morning. So she recommended we try it. It's a bit hidden, so it wasn't crowded. There is both a coffee area and a restaurant, so you can be as fancy as you want. Good food and atmosphere.

Definitely worth eating here. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and the food was wonderful. We were told we were on the lucky table and were offered a free main tasters and free starters along with a free drink. Couldn't be bad. Think my husband had a thing for the waitress haha. We were asked to fill in the visitors book, which... More

Il Fornaio is one of my favorite Italian restaurants so we stopped by for lunch during our shopping excursion in Carmel, CA. It is a large space with lots of great seating and great ambiance. The host was very friendly and cracking jokes. The service was beyond excellent. The waiter was very nice and attentive. I was not sure if... More

We went to the bar here at the end of the night and had a great time with the generous drinks and the terrific people we met. What a great place to end your evening in Carmel. (I've eaten at other Il Fornaio Restaurants in the past and they are always superb. I always eat at the one in Shanghai... More

We combined a great antipasto platter with pasta dishes for a wonderful dinner. The breads were fantastic.
