Interesting and fun, but probably not for everyone!

The Kraken is a typical, sort of grungy beach bar frequented by locals and passing motorcycle riders. We went with some 'locals' and had a good time, because I can have fun almost anywhere. A live band was playing good music and I love to dance, and the food was average for a bar. However, the... read more

Went to met friends on a Sunday afternoon. Kind of digging the lite biker atmosphere. The people are funny and seemed friendly.

Looking at some of the older reviews listed here, I would have to agree that the place was a bit grungy before it was sold last year. The new ownership has spent quite a bit to make some much need improvement in the venue. it's no longer a cash only bar and they accept major credit cards now. Service is... More

This is a great hang out with fun music and people. Went to a concert at the Belly up and was very disappointed. Decided to try the Kraken, used to work across the street a couple decades ago. Had a great time, fun band, good beer. People of all ages, dancing, playing pool and just hanging. Very friendly and would... More

I've visited friends in California for years. We used to come here in the 80s and 90s, and it was always kind of retro old fun. In a way it hasn't changed, but it's now just a dirty, smelly bar with sweaty people in it. I thought it would be fun to revisit, but it wasn't. If you are any... More

One of the longest running dive bars on the North County coast, the Kraken on 101 just south of the San Elijo Lagoon bridge has music every night and a cash-only bar. Weekends can be very busy and the small parking lot makes parking an issue most days (there's street parking on 101). Someplace to go every night of the... More

Sunday afternoons at the Kraken are so much fun. From 4-10 the Brokers Band plays there and sometimes hosts other bands. That time is the most popular with the mid-life (40-60) crowd. Everyone is friendly. It's easy a good atmosphere to make new friends and we all have a good time dancing with each other. The front part is where... More

Could not believe how rude the waitress was to me and my friend. She actually put her cold, empty beer glass against my back and told me to move out of her way! I immediately left and told the front security person and he says "awesome". If this is how management allows their staff to treat customers then I don't... More

This is a great surf shack beach bar, low key, dive bar, off the beaten track kind of place. Wood paneling, posters, photo collections, bumper stickers, and neon lights set the tone. Pool, foosball and little greasy grill in the back. Cheap drinks, great live music.
