We ate at the Black Cat for the second time, and again had an excellent meal in a lovely atmosphere. The portions are on the small side, but the food is fantastic. They also have a wonderful wine list. The service is also excellent. more

On a trip through Central CA we had dinner at the Black Cat Restaurant in Cambria. It was truly a taste extravaganza. Food and service were excellent. The setting is charming. The cuisine is stuck in the 90's, small portions, over elaborate sauces and no balance, everything was over elaborate. Too much nutmeg in the soup made it too sweet, the Pheasant with apples and Calvados lacked any acidity and was too sweet and finally the chocolate souffle was goo all sauce and sugar and no souffle.. We were traveling with a "meat and potatoes" couple and we were concerned that the menu may be a little too eclectic for our friends. My husband ordered the pheasant, I ordered the steak and the meal was absolutely fabulous. Even our picky friends enjoyed their meal! Will definitely visit again. more

as a chef i find it extremely difficult to eat out, as i am viciously critical of every dinning experience i have, but the black cat was the exception. Recently my wife and I took a trip up the coast and stopped at the Black Cat Bistro. What a wonderful experience! The atmosphere was very friendly. We dined at the bar and met regulars and a couple that traveled from the high sierras to celebrate their anniversary. Although we had a reservation - and had it confirmed by our hotel - it took a few minutes for the maitre de/ waiter to figure it out. He was a nice guy but he told us we had to "ask" for water and bread - shortages. I ordered a decent specialty salad, as did my wife but any more... more
