Best traditional cheap pizza around

Gioia has the best cheap, by-the-slice, thin crust pizza in Berkeley. There is better pizza, but it's in a high end restaurant (Pizzaiolo), Californian (Cheese Board), or something else. The spinach and garlic was very good, and the plain cheese is reliable. The crust is a bit on the thin side and... read more

The spinach and garlic was very good, and the plain cheese is reliable. The crust is a bit on the thin side and not chewy enough. The tomato sauce is fresh... More

Wednesday night is Pizza night for our family. This year Christmas Eve was Wednesday night. Zachary's, our usual choice while visiting Berkeley, was closed. Thankfully Gioia had a couple of guys working hard to satisfy people like us looking for our favorite food. This is a tiny establishment with a counter to order and pay, a cooking area in the... Gioia is a NY-style, by-the-slice pizzeria located in north Berkeley on a block that almost feels like a corner of Greenwich Village. The tiny cafe, opened in 2004 by a couple from Brooklyn, has a display case with pizzas ready to go, seating for only 7 inside (facing the wall) and a sidewalk bench out front. It's an excellent choice... More

Enjoyed the variety and quality of ingredients. Another purveyor of fine Pizza in Berkeley. The Julian with crispy kale, sausage, and loads of garlic is my favorite.

We were in the area on vacation and found this pizzeria on TripAdvisor. It was okay - the slices are $3.50 and are inconsistent. My husband ordered his first piece and then ordered another - there was a big difference between the sizes of the two. I had the pepperoni - it was good, but just that. To dine inside,... More

i've wanted to like gioia, which has a large following. it's not terrible by any means, but i only enjoy their plain. the vegetarian toppings never seem to harmonize, and meat toppings are quite salty. the crust is slightly thicker than i prefer.

Gioia Pizzeria offers tasty fairly thin crusted pizza. You can buy by the slice or get a full pie. They offer a wide range of toppings. It's always busy in there, but they keep things moving efficiently.

Gioia Pizza and The Cheeseboard make the best thin crust pizza in Berkeley. Of course that's a subjective opinion but you won't go wrong at either location.

Rightly honored as among the very best pizzerias in the East Bay, or perhaps the West Coast, this small and pleasingly fragrant place is a magnet for any innocent passersby. My vacation landlord had recommended the Coffee and Cheese Market nearby, and after shopping there my nose led me right into Gioia. Although they prepare and serve a variety of... More

I was visiting a local and we had been shopping at the Monterrey Market and she suggested stopping off for a slice of pizza before driving back up in to the Berkeley Hills. Her parking karma had gotten us a space right in front of the place so after depositing the groceries in the car we joined the line. There... More
