Tucked away in an industrial and artists loft area is an authentically Italian restaurant with cooking by an Italian chef. Having travelled in Italy on several occasions, I can say the food is very similar in the admirable simplicity and quality experienced there. The space is calm and quiet enough for easy conversation, and an outdoor table on the loading... More

This restaurant is off the beaten path, in an industrial area just north of Ashby. It is owned by a young couple - he is in the kitchen, she runs the front of the house. The restaurant can be noisy, so ask to sit in the little curtained off area on the south side of the restaurant. The food can... More

Our Valentines Day dinner at Riva Cucina in Berkeley, CA was beyond excellent. It is my practice to avoid going to a restaurant on holidays such as Mothers Day, New Years, and Valentines Day. Generally, I find that the menu is inadequate, the service is poor and the bill is inflated. This Valentines Day, as I was attending theater out... More

This was our first time at Riva Cucina - don't know how we missed it after 6+ years in Berkeley - and it won't be our last. They featured a special menu for New Years Eve. I had the black cod/muscle/clam zuppa and my wife had the risotto, both of which were excellent. Our waitress helped us pick the perfect... More

Hosted a retirement dinner for 9 at Riva. I preordered some appetizers and pastas. Top notch. All the pastas were perfect, the Fungi and the sausage ones most memorable. The local Petrale Sole was super fresh and done just to the point of cooked. I don't like raw insides but I don't like overdone either. Great shared meal. The wine... More

Off the beaten path, it's in a historical brick building that housed the Durkee Spice Co. Oh & be amazed- there is parking!!! We took our daughter & bf there for her birthday. She & I had the lamb shank over polenta. Hubby had the gnocchi, bf had the tortellini soup & we shared some roasted Brussels sprouts. The lamb... More

What a great find and am absolutely delighted my friend took me to dine here. If you're in Berkeley and want Italian go here. When you walk in the first thing you'll notice is the dim lighting, great for a romantic setting. We already had a reservation so we were seated right away. Decided to skip the appetizers and went... Lovely setting to have a relaxed dinner. Having said that, the pasta in the pasta bolognese was outstanding. The sauce was tasty but on the thin side. The osso buco was a bit dry but flavorful as was the pork loin. Beet salad with faro was delicious as was the mixed green salad. The nona cake was perfect and the... More

This is a lovely place for authentic Italian food, and one of my favorite restaurants in Berkeley. The chef is from Bologna and takes great care with the food, which is fresh and well-presented. Pastas are house-made, and the bread and infused olive oil provided for the table are so good I could eat nothing but that and wine and... More
