A Berkeley Institution that continues to shine

The origins of the farm-to-table movement has been traced to Chez Panisse and it's owner Alice Waters. This venerable restaurant remains true to their roots: using fresh, local, seasonal, organic produce in their food, and tasty, simple dishes. The ingredients are the highlight. This review is for the Chez Panisse Cafe, not for the downstairs formal restaurant. What has happened to Chez Panisse? Has thirty plus years of fame gone to its collective head? I HAD to give it three stars, but I would have liked to give it two. The three stars are for the food, which is still very good. But... More

The restaurant that gave us farm to table -- they could almost conduct their kitchen without a refrigerator, food is so fresh. Menu is short and specific based on the freshest available ingredients. We chose sea scallops, a pasta dish, pork and lamb dishes. Each dish had wonderful flavor and every component of the dish was dazzling. Plenty of food... More

I called to get a reservation for the cafe, day of, at 11:00 am.. I wasn't expecting much, but I thought it was worth a try. To my amazement, whoever the hostess was that day was excellent, and very helpful! I asked if it was at all possible to get a table for one, knowing how busy they are and... More

Any self respecting restaurant fan will acknowledge Chez Panisse as the original catalyst for the modern respect for seasonal produce in restaurants that now seems commonplace. I visited CP on this my first visit to San Francisco and loved it. The warm and cosy decor seemed so Liberty/William Morris/ Charles Rennie Mackintosh inspired with its dark stained pine paneling and... More

It may be old and may no longer be the hipster joint but jeez this place is amazing. Just great food and service. Alice Waters venue lives on and lives on strong. Great.

While most are familiar with the Chez Pannise set menu downstairs that takes a reservation weeks or months off. The upstairs menu is absolutely fabulous and serves both lunch and dinner. Alice Waters, the chef, is world renown for creating CA Cuisine and contributing significantly to farm to fork. Definitely fit for foodies, it all started here.

Went again this year for my annual visit...and it was still delicious but the focus was lacking on the main course as the pork loin was sliced haphazardly and looked more like a casual chow than fine dining. Now I know that CP does not plate for design as it is a natural presentation but it was still lacking in... More

We were looking forward to dining at Chez Panisse as it's been on my culinary bucket list for years. We ate in the cafe which has a warm and relaxing atmosphere. The table lighting, decor and music made the environment comfortable and beautiful. The food was good, but not inspiring nor special. We were hoping for more and were disappointed... More

The everchanging daily menu of Farm to Table French and nouveau American is always very good, but limits your choices and they can run out of your selection. An excellent Mushroom Ragu with Homemade Rigatoni and Wood Fired Clams were on offer with Creme Caramel and Lime Sherbet for dessert. Intimate seating with efficient service. Alice Waters served us our... More
