What an amazing experience we had at Chez Panisse. I went with my husband and two sons and we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. The salmon entree was the best salmon I have ever had in a restaurant (cooked in a fig leaf) and my husband's steak was out of this world. The almond cake dessert was also fabulous. We sat upstairs,... More

Not much to add since this is such a famous restaurant in the world. My comment is just to confirm what has been told to praise the service, food and decoration. This is a place makes you feel that you have to come back as soon as you step out from the door already.

I recently re-visited this wonderful cafe for lunch and I wasn't disappointed. It was a wonderful tasty meal and the service was great. They never rushed us and we had time to visit. I had the steak sandwich and not your typical smashed between two pieces of bread, the thinly sliced succulent beef was dressed with a subtle, delicious chimichurri... More

We last visited this restaurant about 15 years ago. The food was better this time, which is saying something. Last night's duck breast was sublime, as was the lobster salad and plum gallette. The service veered between lazy, incompetent and surly: kept waiting for just about everything; ordering a glass of wine was harder than getting up and pouring it... More

Passing through Berkeley on our way from San Francisco to Sonoma, we were recommended Alice Water's famous restaurant, and were not disappointed by our experience in the upper level cafe. Having attempted to squeeze in some last-minute tourism at SF's Legion of Honour, we arrived rather later than our reservation for lunch but were warmly welcomed by the friendly staff.... More

We had lunch at the cafe upstairs. What can one say about the place that started locally sourced, locavore dining? The halibut tartare and the wild nettle souffle were amazing. The desserts, including a simple plate of perfect fruit, were delicious. Service was on the formal side, but totally correct. If I had to nitpick: we asked for additional bread,... More

Friend took me to Chez Pannise Café for lunch as a birthday treat, and it was just that. Hadn't been there in a decade or more and had forgotten just how good and reasonable the lunch is. Renovation after their fire was almost imperceptible and the room is quiet despite being full of patrons chatting amiably. Menu changes daily and... More

(Note that this is a review of the restaurant; there is an upstairs cafe, with a different menu and lower prices.) Getting a reservation at this restaurant is daunting if you use Open Table; they open up slots a month in advance, and they seem to go quickly on the website, so that unless you are up in the early... It's iconic - the food was fresh, beautiful, and perfectly prepared. But boring. I'm glad I went, but next time will try more recent additions to the food scene.

My husband and I treated my parents to a dinner at Chez Panisse the week of our wedding. It was the perfect way to thank them for their generosity and make them feel extra special. They are from Arizona, so this was a very "Berkeley" experience for them, which they loved. My mom said that the Pinot Noir was the... More
