classic Cal cuisine

This is where modern California cuisine began. Still a first-rate restaurant and bistro. Probably overpriced, carried by its reputation. Café for lunch. Dinner downstairs is usually pre-fixe

I made reservations a month in advance knowing that this was the one place I wanted to go to while vacationing in San Francisco. It was our 20th Anniversary and my husband, the foodie, has dreamed of eating at Alice Waters famous restaurant. Two things I will say #1 - Our bubble did not burst - the food OUTSTANDING! #2... A took my wife here on one of our first dates, we're happily married for 39 years and are always amazed on the consistency and attention to detail of Alice Waters.

The menu changes every season; be it the organic vegetables and fruits, the free range meat, or the catch of the day, the food is always fresh and pleasing to all the senses. The taste of the food Chez Panisse is never covered up by salts and sauces; the natural flavors are enhanced by the perfect herbs and spices. My... More

My daughter asked if we could go to Chez Panisse Cafe for her birthday and of course, I said yes. It had been a number of years since we dined downstairs but the memory was one of an exceptional restaurant. I found the cafe menu lacking. In particular, the main courses were limited. Plus, I made a bad choice by... More

Located on Shattuck Avenue, just a few blocks southwest of the UC campus and around the corner from one of the first Peet's Coffee shops, is Alice Waters' signature accomplishment in California cuisine. At the time Alice sourced much of her fresh herbs and veggies from a local middle school garden - a project started to introduce grade schoolers to... More

...of course. Although it's a bit strange to eat at a place that you know will just have to be great...so no surprise. Just fun to be there.

The Cafe staff and especially the waiter for our table were extremely attentive and professional. The entrees off the menu we chose were pork shoulder and halibut, both of which were cooked and seasoned par excellence and delicious beyond comparison. We were able to make a reservation one week in advance in the Cafe which is shorter than the norm,... More

To make a reservation here, you MUST call as soon as reservations open a month in advance to arrange for one of two seatings, before 6 or after 8. A single meal/menu is served for the night, and you don't know what it will be when you make the reservation. But if you like food, you are certain to love... More

Love this place! Enjoy it even more than the restaurant downstairs. They always have at least one fantastic pasta dish and their food is incredible fresh and the atmosphere upstairs is bustling and comfy.
