Oy.

Man, I wish I loved Saul's. But in an effort to become some sort of artisanal, locavore (i.e. very Berkeley) Jewish deli, it's lost what marginal Jewish-deli-ness it once had. It does not feel very haimish. Except it still does attract a lot of us Berkeley Jews, many of whom come, eat, and gripe... read more

I think this is the best facsimile of a "real" deli in the Bay area. Ethnic food such as matzo ball soup, latkes, and so on is pretty good. More general food varies and can sometimes be quite good and other times luck of the draw. Service also varies, and the place can be both crowded and disorganized. (Rude service... More

If you go to Saul's Restaurant and Deli, don't linger after dinner over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. You're likely to be accosted by Peter, one of the owners, for hogging the table and not making it available for someone else. That's what happened to us when we were at Saul's on a recent Monday evening... More

Okay, it ain't Katz's. It is the best darn Deli we can get without hopping a flight. The pastrami is moist, smokey, melt in your mouth delicious. The pickles are fun and amazing (bought a quart to go, I am a pickle junkie more on that topic elsewhere). The wait staff if friendly, informative, and attentive. The place is busy... More

I had lunch at this restaurant with my son. It was the first visit for the both of us so we were excited and were anticipating some excellent deli food. After a 20 minute wait, we were seated at the window which was nice. I had a half sandwich and soup combination. In all honesty, the sandwich was not at... More

Nice food. Not strictly Kosher, but no pigs and shrimp etc. They make their own pastrami which is excellent. Nice smoked fish. Good chopped liver. many seats, so usually it is easy to get a place except at Christmas and Jewish holidays. Great breakfasts, hearty sandwiches and excellent matzo ball soup. Seldom do they have borscht. Waffles and pancakes are... More

It's the only game in town for jewish deli food. That being said, the meats are not fatty, the potato latkes are quite good and the people who work here are all friendly & efficient. There may even be live Klezmer music the night you're there!

You can't beat the New York delicatessen style and atmosphere here. Great soups and overstuffed sandwiches-- love the chicken liver sandwich. Side dishes--such as porato salad--are great, as are the pickles. Try the deserts.

What a wonderful Saturday evening dinner. Three interesting types of pickles were given to our table on seating. They had an interesting selection of regional beers and the waitress was knowledgeable about what each tasted like and what they would pair with. The menu changes within the week so there is always something new to try. The Zatar chicken breast... More

What are great way to start our touring around the Bay Area! Superb pastrami! Big Latke! Fair-sized sandwiches with exceptional ingredients. Expect to wait for a table, but very good service once you get inside.
