Deli Food is alive and well at Saul's

went here after seeing the movie: Deli Man. was going in with lowered expectations after seeing mouth watering pictures of some of the most famous delis in America. but we were very impressed with our meal at Saul's: good pastrami, liked the matzo ball soup, very satisfying stuffed cabbage... read more

Every few years I go back to Saul's to see whether it's improved. Being from the Bronx, I would love to have a good delicatessen here in Berkeley. This time I had just a light lunch with a fried -- a sliced turkey sandwich on rye with green salad and iced tea. The turkey was tasteless. The salad was ok... More

One of the things I dislike about New York delicatessens is the huge portions. Either food gets wasted or I feel sick from each eating too much. At Saul's you can get half portions and the food is much healthier than the average deli. Try everything - you won't be disappointed.

In the Berkeley's "Gourmet Ghetto", along with Chez Panisse, Cesar, Acme Bread, etc, is Saul's Deli, an it is good! On a Saturday afternoon, the was a line, you give your name to the hostess, and wait. I twas crowded but we waited no more than 10 minutes. They give you three pickles m, that they make, to "taste" while... More

This is not a classic New York delicatessen. While you can get matzo ball soup, a pastrami sandwich, and whitefish here, it is a Berkeley version of a deli. There's fresh green salads, some yummy middle Eastern dishes, and vegetarian options. Many of the ingredients are organic and local. The service is spotty, especially on weekends when they're very busy.... More

A new York style deli, but with California style ingredients. Free range eggs, Acme bread, organic greens, loose leaf teas. Just don't expect any bacon.

We found this place on our last night in Berkeley, otherwise we would have come back. So many choices - authentic Rueben sandwich with lots of meat, homemade latkes, delicious soup, beautiful bakery items - my eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach. Portions were good sized, it was busy on a Saturday evening, but the service was friendly and... More

Man, I wish I loved Saul's. But in an effort to become some sort of artisanal, locavore (i.e. very Berkeley) Jewish deli, it's lost what marginal Jewish-deli-ness it once had. It does not feel very haimish. Except it still does attract a lot of us Berkeley Jews, many of whom come, eat, and gripe about how it just ain't NY... More

I think this is the best facsimile of a "real" deli in the Bay area. Ethnic food such as matzo ball soup, latkes, and so on is pretty good. More general food varies and can sometimes be quite good and other times luck of the draw. Service also varies, and the place can be both crowded and disorganized. (Rude service... More

If you go to Saul's Restaurant and Deli, don't linger after dinner over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. You're likely to be accosted by Peter, one of the owners, for hogging the table and not making it available for someone else. That's what happened to us when we were at Saul's on a recent Monday evening... More
