Atmosphere a bit noisy, even for our early, pre-theatre dinner hour. But the food is fabulous! Guacamole to die for. And a chocolate dessert that I still dream about. My friends' mains were also very very good - an enchilada of some sort and a chile relleno.

Drawbacks here are that the place (especially the back dining area) can be VERY noisy, it's not open for lunch, and that reservations are only taken for 5:30pm - after that it's first come, first seated. But the food is really good, especially the roast chicken and the steak, which are prepared exactly to your order and accompanied by rice,... More

This gem in Berkeley, Ca.was a surprise! Beautiful evening, outdoor bar scene, excellent Mexican meal with unusual presentations. The margaritas are a treat and NOT your boring dull, sweet over the top Taco Bar beverage. Hand crafted by a lovely bartender, served in an old fashioned glass AND a bite!, I will go back just to enjoy one of these.... More

Best Bar scene in Berkeley. When you enter don't stop at the main Bar, instead head back the the great indoor/outdoor Bar at the back of the Restaurant. This place is so full of energy, great food, and very good service. Authentic, delicious Mexican food at a great price. Try the Duck Enchilada!!

We rented the Abajo private dining area for our daughter's graduation, and the food was superb and the service great. The food was served family style, and there was something for everyone, including vegetarians; the ribs and the salads disappeared quickly. It was not inexpensive, but it was worth the money we spent.

Although the hubbie and I just went for drinks and a snack later in the evening, we were treated very well by the kind young bartender. Plus the drinks were excellent and their chips and salsas are great.

I ordered their 11.00 drink and it was so small that I had to order another one.to enjoy the taste. The food was good; but the same night I had the runs; I am afraid of this place and will probably not return. I wonder about their staff and kitchen being clean.

We waited less than the 30-45m stated and were seated on the patio during a busy Friday eve. Our waiter was thoughtful and attentive. Split the Sikhal plate - fantastic chips, salsas and the eggplant/pumpkin seed dip was great. Albondigas tho slightly salty had great flavors. Shrimp ceviche good - just good. Asparagus nicely done. Lengua tacos fabulous. Don't come... More

Love the atmosphere and the food. Inventive decor, nice outdoor seating. Great food- not heavy. Love the fish tacos and the Margaritas. I'll go again.

Comal is a very welcome addition to Berkeley. The festive ambiance, cheerful service and wonderful food are a winning combination. I love this food. It is Southern Mexican -- the best of all the special flavors of Mexico, without the heaviness of added cheese, sour cream and other fats. Fresh corn tamales with inventive fillings, spicy vegetarian or meat enchiladas,... More
