A fun concept restaurant with booths on one side and tatami style small rooms on the other, with traditional low tables. Most small plates (tapas style) cost between $5-12 with a few at $15 and the steak at $20. 2 people would need to share about 8 dishes. The mini ramen at $10 was average. The chicken on sticks, at... Arriving in California enroute to Kyoto, my son suggested we anticipate the trip by enjoying an evening at his favorite izakaya in Berkeley. Slightly skeptical after a n\year in the U.S. looking for "authentic" Japanese food and even drinkable sake, I agreed. As soon as we arrived there, I felt confused; it seemed I was already "home" in Kyoto! Atmosphere,... More

Flavorful grilled Japanese food (no sushi) -- interesting and unusual items (quail, medium sized whole squid, chicken hearts, pork belly -- served on skewers). Very diverse collection of Sake and Shochu

Ippuku serves authentic Japanese ikzakaya food -- mostly yakitori, but some other small plates as well. Try the shiitake mushrooms and the yuba tofu skin. The sake list is short but very we'll curated.

So the food here is traditional Japanese and very tasty (but for some people order chicken neck, gizzards, and other parts not usually on American menus might be off-putting). Everything is grilled and flavored to perfection. The plates are very small and served family style so it's great for group dining. The drinks (especially the grapefruit cocktail) are delicious. The... More

Eating at Ippuku was the capstone of my west coast vacation. The small restaurant was aesthetically serene, with locally grown wood, walls and seats, different shaped dishes for each food we were served, and friendly waiters. I wanted to try something different, and everything was different somehow. We had tiny roasted local ears of corn that we husked at the... More

I love everything about Ippuku. It is so minimalist yet warm, simple yet complex tasting. We had our waiter pick the best of the best for us and he delivered! The goyza, steak (tartar like), yakitori, sea urchin, rice balls we're excellent. The crab balls were insanely good. We also liked the squid and the fried chicken. We had vodka... More

Ippuku is not your typical Japanese "tempura and teriyaki combo dinner" place. It is a rare experience that captures the uniqueness of the Japanese aesthetic. Ippuku's "small plates to be served with drinks" format is found all over Japan, but a style of Japanese restaurant only gradually appearing on the scene here. Ippuku is definitely the first of its kind... More

I am not a sushi fan so when I find a Japanese restaurant that does not do sushi I rejoice because of all the other good stuff that Japanese cuisine has to offer. Ippuku has grilled dishes (mostly chicken) of many kinds, a wide choice of Saki, soups and more. There is a fusion influence clearly but the feeling of... More

Thevservice was outstanding. Our waitress was very attentive and accommodating to our needs as we we were not familiar with the menue or drink offerings. A unique experience outside of our comfort zone. Food a bit "heavy" and the menue could offer more greens and even sea food options. The quail egg and chicken sticks were quite tasty.
