We were drawn in by the old school ambience of the place and the vast selection of Japanese liquor on display in the bar. The pacing of the small plates food service was very slow and choppy, and the smoke from the open kitchen was choke-worthy. Seriously a health hazard to the people who work there. They need more ventilation... More

The place was full and lively. The feel and looks of the place was good. There were 4 of us. The menu is rather small and poorly described in English. How many Japanese restaurant are there where you can NOT get rice as a side dish? Some rice comes with tempura order only underneath the fish. The chicken on sticks... More

There were 6 of us and it was a dinner party. I could not resist ordering something unknown and so together with 2 others, we shared the urchin. It was good, far from what I imagined and a worthwhile experience. Noisy place and not real comfortable for someone nearing 80, but minor distractions from what was otherwise a great evening.

A fun concept restaurant with booths on one side and tatami style small rooms on the other, with traditional low tables. Most small plates (tapas style) cost between $5-12 with a few at $15 and the steak at $20. 2 people would need to share about 8 dishes. The mini ramen at $10 was average. The chicken on sticks, at... Arriving in California enroute to Kyoto, my son suggested we anticipate the trip by enjoying an evening at his favorite izakaya in Berkeley. Slightly skeptical after a n\year in the U.S. looking for "authentic" Japanese food and even drinkable sake, I agreed. As soon as we arrived there, I felt confused; it seemed I was already "home" in Kyoto! Atmosphere,... More

Flavorful grilled Japanese food (no sushi) -- interesting and unusual items (quail, medium sized whole squid, chicken hearts, pork belly -- served on skewers). Very diverse collection of Sake and Shochu

Ippuku serves authentic Japanese ikzakaya food -- mostly yakitori, but some other small plates as well. Try the shiitake mushrooms and the yuba tofu skin. The sake list is short but very we'll curated.

So the food here is traditional Japanese and very tasty (but for some people order chicken neck, gizzards, and other parts not usually on American menus might be off-putting). Everything is grilled and flavored to perfection. The plates are very small and served family style so it's great for group dining. The drinks (especially the grapefruit cocktail) are delicious. The... More

Eating at Ippuku was the capstone of my west coast vacation. The small restaurant was aesthetically serene, with locally grown wood, walls and seats, different shaped dishes for each food we were served, and friendly waiters. I wanted to try something different, and everything was different somehow. We had tiny roasted local ears of corn that we husked at the... More

I love everything about Ippuku. It is so minimalist yet warm, simple yet complex tasting. We had our waiter pick the best of the best for us and he delivered! The goyza, steak (tartar like), yakitori, sea urchin, rice balls we're excellent. The crab balls were insanely good. We also liked the squid and the fried chicken. We had vodka... More
