Every other German restaurant we've visited has had a German atmosphere and theme. Gaumenkitzel, however, feels a lot like a cafeteria. Kind of antiseptic. An excellent selection of German beers. The food was good, and as far as we know, authentic, but there was nothing about the meal that stood out.

We had a wonderful tomato soup and a plate of cheeses and sausage. Swift service! Lovely atmosphere!

Our son and daughter-in-law brought us to this restaurant when we were visiting them in April. They had visited the place before and had enjoyed the food. We all tried different beers from their extensive selection. The server was very knowledgeable about the types of beers and the regions they came from. I don't remember all the selections of food... Seeking decent German food on a rainy day at lunch time, we popped into Gaumenkitzel. The restaurant is very open with a high, beamed ceiling and fans plus lots of tall windows. It was very modern German looking to me, but quite cold that day. They have some German foods for sale against the wall. Incidentally, the bathroom was very... More

You know you're in for a good dinner when you casually walk into an establishment at 5:30pm on a Saturday afternoon and are politely asked 'Do you have a Reservation?' OH YES!! If you like German food and you want to have a nice experience, do visit Gaumenkitzel. My husband's Mother is from Germany so he knows German food. We... More

This is one of the better restaurants in the It is Berkeley of course so at Gaumenkitzel the classic German sausage and potatoes options are complimented with a nice variety of vegetarian friendly options. They have a lot of different beers options, somehow beer for breakfast just feels right at a German restaurant and they have some very tasty brews... More

I was in Berkley on a business trip and stopped for lunch on Friday. It was really weird eating in a German restaurant but the food was great. I ordered a very authentic pumpkin soup and plate of cheese, sausage and bread. Excellent.

Service was great, brews were great, food was FANTASTIC! We had a reservation, and were seated immediately. Enough menu selections that we'll be back to try items our group of five didn't.

My husband, of European heritage, is always on the lookout for German food when we travel. So of course on a recent trip we ended up here. I had the pretzel and sausage plate. I had no idea a pretzel could be that flavorful! The sausage (brats) were smaller than most brats I've had but so tasty that I was... More

I'm of German parents & this restaurant reminds me of their cooking & my visits to Germany. I love this restaurant! The food is always good & the wait staff friendly & responsive. There's good German beer on tap. The restaurant is roomy & It's easy to carry on a conversation without raising your voice...a rarity! I keep going back!!... More
