Had a stopover in Bakersfield, and decided to try J's place for dinner with the family. A bit of a waiting line (we did not have a reservation), probably due to it's popularity, but we (all 9 of us) got our seating in less that 15 minutes, and just before the closing time. Most of us had taco which was... More

Delicious fried chicken and cornbread. I had fish the last time and that was great. This time I had chicken and waffles. I don't like waffles with my chicken so I won't do that again. You may like it though. Great place. I will be back again to try something else on their menu the next time I am in... More

The food is excellent and we've been here a few times but the ribs are mostly fat. The waitress offered another set of ribs to compensate for the fatty ones but found out from the kitchen that all the ribs are that way. Everything else is excellent and the service is fantastic. Too bad about the ribs.

Have eaten here many times. The best fried chicken I have ever had. Ribs, meat loaf, pork chops, whatever is on the menu is just outstanding. Great prices as well. Eat here and it will be a favorite to you as well. Yum.

Wow, I was quite impressed. Who thought you could get good soul food in Bakersfield?! The chicken was perfectly moist, even their breast! Their fried chicken was delicious. All the sides were to die for which included the mac and cheese, fried cabbage, dirty rice and yams. I would definitely come back here again! I was quite impressed!

As I am not an expert on Southern food I can't comment on how close it is to the real thing. What I can say is that we liked it very much! With a family of 4 (kids 10 & 13) we ordered 3 entrees. The kids shared 4 pieces of fried chicken & 2 waffles. An odd combination but... More

Southern food prepared well and served with a smile. Chicken and waffles, catfish, and chicken and dumplings are all so good they will make you wanna slap yo mama! The sides are fantastic and the tea is sweet. *Rosedale location (could not find one on Ming Ave.)

Southern BBQ was not among my favorite things, but J's Place showed that it could be done on a masterful level. The ribs melt in my mouth, and the cornbread, plus the various, unusual sides added to the experience as well. We also had chicken and waffles, and those were also delicious.

The best fried chicken I've ever had; it was seasoned lightly and crispy to perfection. The waffles were delicious with a hint of cinnimon. On the inside the hot waffles were nice and fluffy, but on the outside they were crispy as well as the chicken. At first I thought it was an odd combination of chicken and waffles, but... More
