This bar/restaurant is on the Camino de Santiago. As the time of year visited meant we had little choice, low season, we assumed the standard would be mediocre at best. Wrong. The bar staff were charming and spoke a little more English than we did Spanish. The wine was superb and I noticed they were aficionados of Gin...at least a... More

I don't agree with Tedstravelogs from Sydney. I understand why some may think the service is slow and the staff surly, but this misses the point about how important it is to do our best to integrate in regional towns where they do things their way. To watch and listen and be empathetic with a little patience seems to do... More

What's good: the location - smack in the middle of the town's happening square. The outside tables look very inviting - until you make the mistake of going inside or, on the off chance, somebody turns up to serve you. What's not good: almost anything you have the misfortune to eat, the surly, reluctant service, the TV blaring some Euro... More

Maybe someone read negative comments re service because no waiting. When bill came was expecting to be more as seemed amazing value - quality and portions.

Enjoyed a good meal here, particularly appreciating a plate of grilled vegetables which is not easy to find in this part of Spain. But meal was spoilt by poor service later on when we were left unattended for long periods.

We had a delightful outdoor lunch and had all sorts of food. It was all incredible!!!!. The monk fish, the grilled shrimp, the grilled vegetales. ..mushrooms and more. Hard to find food this good at such a quaint location AND with such fantastic service. They really went out of their way to serve everything just the way we wanted. Wow!!

Spending a week in Santillana, this was the restaurant we returned to. Great food, great price and great people. Two evening menus with a bottle of wine at about 40 euros.

El Castillo serves regional dishes in an almost "pub" like atmosphere. We stopped in while strolling about Santillana del Mar. Took a seat in the back, which was quiet but with a view of the more active bar area. Started with an ensaladilla rusa which was an interesting take on potato salad with color from beets and shrimp on top.... More
