We haven't been to the Captain's Table for a couple of years, but I always remembered their lamb shank as being one of the best from past visits, so we went for an early dinner on the Thursday evening at the start of the 2013 Easter weekend. Access to the restaurant is via a narrow staircase... read more

Our first visit to this restaurant was exceptional, but 16 months on there are new owners, with the restaurant side suffering. The number of tables has been cut and a bar and tv put into one side, so the lovely romantic atmosphere is gone. The food was not the quality we remembered, nor was the service, and we will not... We had seen some wonderful reviews on TripAdvisor for this, but were disappointed. It seems that the business has changed hands quite recently and has a new chef, and I assume most of the reviews were written before this happened. The entrance being through a pub didn't bother us, but there was no atmosphere upstairs and the food was nothing... More

Best meal we had in our trip around SA. We love meat and the beef was outstanding quality, and exactly done as we ordered.

Good food, decent value, odd setting. I could add - short staffed, but it was quiet when we ate there and we only saw one guy trying to do everything. OK, this is above the 2/6d pub which is a local landmark so, for those who struggled, that is how you find it. The access is through the bar, which... More

It was quiet when we went. Tuesday evening and 9pm, so just one other table occupied. Entering the restaurant through the pub you wind up some stairs behind the bar. The room upstairs is simple, and the food is simple but perfectly done. Yellowfin with dauphinoise potatoes was perfectly cooked. Hot plates too. Important for an Englishman! Great value. Mains... We had been recommended by friends to visit and read the reviews before booking. On a Friday evening we drove from Cape Town (about a 45 minutes drive ) , located the restaurant ( with some difficulty) by the sign on the pavement. We were shown the way to the restaurant through the bar of the 2/6p pub, upstairs to a... More

Very charming restaurant, that is entered in sort of a secret entrance behind the busy bar on ground level. The menu was newly re-done and apparently a new head chief has taken over. The food is extremely priced well below the competition and the atmosphere is relaxed. The wines are also good value. The service is, as in most SA... More

The steak I had at the Captain's Table just above the 2&6 was the best I have had in a long time. Aside from the guaranteed quality of the Grade A filet...the green peppercorn marinade, the garlic mashed (real) potatoes, vegetables in a flavorful sauce...and not some small fancy schmancy plate of food. Definitely a must have for carnivores! Next... More
