Excellent food, lovely to have well cooked veg.

Went for a weekday lunch en route from North Wales. The pub was very busy, but staff were friendly and didn't rush him when my husband was selecting which beer to try - allowed him to taste before choosing. We have been twice in the past week, calling in when on the Monmouth & Brecon canal. The dog was given a bowl of chicken each time and loved that! The service was extremely friendly. The food delicious and very good value. The Jamaican jerk beef ribs with sweet potato fries are particularly good. Wine list was diverse and good... More

On a recent trip to Crickhowell we were looking for a place to eat, as we had been out all day and were starving. We decided to pop in here as it looked great from the outside. As we walked through the door we were greeted by a member of staff who explained as it was late afternoon they were... More

We went to the Bear three times within a week, simply because we liked the atmosphere so much. Also had excellent food, and nice pints of local ales.

We were staying in Gilwern and The Bear was recommended as a great place for a meal. It was. Our group of five couldn't book a table in the restaurant on Saturday night, but were told to turn up early and get a table in the bar, which we did. The place soon filled up so we were glad we'd... More

My family and I went for an evening meal here for my Auntie's 50th birthday, and despite there being 11 of us, the service was fast and pleasant throughout. The food was absolutely delicious! I had three courses from the specials menu; mussels to start (which were some of the tastiest mussels I've ever had!), lamb for main and Eton... More

We visited this twice for food in our weeks holiday in the area. The food was excellent, and it was easy to get a table in the bar, or you could book a table in the restaurant (and pay a little extra). Ordering was from the bar, with waiter delivery. We have faggots and lasagne one evening, and jerk style... More

Tried to get a table in the Dragon Inn but was fully booked, walked up the road to the Bear to find plenty of available tables, we sat in the bar area. We ordered starter of bread and olives to share, which was light enough to start with although a bit messy with separate oil/balsamic bottles... For mains my wife... More

We chose the Bear after already eating at the Dragon and Red Indigo. The faggotts and short rib were lovely, as was the ginger ice cream. Shame you have to go to the bar to order.

very pleasant, dog friendly dining experiences always. The hotel is clean and welcoming, for a meal or just a drink. My 2 dogs are given a lovely welcome by staff, and always have a bowl of chicken when I eat there. Comfortable in all areas, although formal dining areas I have found a little too 'cosy' on occasions that I... More
