Delicious dishes individually prepared and cooked

A warm welcome. How nice to talk to the chef/ owner. The Riverside is run by a personable young couple who gave us delicious food and made us very welcome.

Having wanted to dine in this restaurant since seeing Mrs Mary Ann Gilchrist on the 'Great British Menu', our expectations were exceedingly high for dinner and we were not disappointed. Mary Ann greeted us personally and chatted to us for quite some time at our dining table and that made our night! We stayed for a gourmet break that consisted... More

The restaurant scores excellent for the quality and taste of the food but poor for ambience and average for service. The food matched some of the best restaurants we have been to and Mary Ann Gilchrist is certainly a talented chef. The ambience is a disappointment. The dining room could be made good as it has a nice location overlooking... More

The wife was given a Red Letterday voucher and found this "Restaurant with Rooms", thought it was ideal so the driver me, could also have a drink, so booked. We had seen Mary Ann on the Great British Menu in 2014, so it was a win/win situation. It was a 120 mile drive along beautiful Welsh roads with stunning scenery.... More

This was our 2nd visit to the Carlton Riverside for Mary Ann's wonderful food. They have just 4 bedrooms, all doubles with bath & shower. The rooms are clean & nicely furnished but this is a restaurant with rooms, you come here for the food and the food is fantastic. The roads and scenery in the area are beautiful, its... More

Extremely welcoming, even before I got through the door! 'You must be Simon' was Mary Ann's opening line to me! Lovely little seated area for an opening g&t. The main restaurant has wonderful views over the river. The wine list is extensive, with several half bottles available, including desert wines. My main of roast rump of Welsh lamb was perfect,... It was all lovely but the food is the stand out element .the hotel was a good setting for us to go out and about each day to see the fantastic scenery of hills, valley, rivers and waterfalls. The food was fresh and cooked to order. A pleasant menu with thought given to Welsh beef which not really being a... More

We visited after seeing Mary Ann on GBM and visiting friends were keen to go. Small but interesting menu. Starters were delightful especially beetroot infused salmon. Main meals also excellent but slightly overpriced for local steak/beef. Lots of lovely coffee with petit fours in lounge area. Lovely Large dining room but all diners were placed close together at one end... More

Fine dining style restaurant. Nice touch when you arrive you have a drink in their lounge and make your order and then they bring you into the dining room. We have the mushrooms on brioche, ribeye steak and lamb which was delicious. I was worried about the portions before going but we were definitely full by the end. Lovely restaurant... More

We watched Mary Ann on GBM and loved her drive and passion for flavour over pretentious presentation and have long wanted to visit. We weren't disappointed. You could not have asked for more welcoming hosts. The room was lovely with a fabulous view of the river and very comfortable. The gourmet evening begun with a generous aperitif followed by equally... More
