We stayed here because it seems to be the Yorkshire gastro pub with rooms that many journalists are raving about. Maybe our expectations were too high, but this was definitely a case of style over substance. First the staff. Unfriendly apart from the young chap behind the bar. And the waitress who tried to help us identify the cheeses that... More

Thank you for your review. I'm sorry that you were disappointed with your stay with us, and have discussed your comments with all of our staff. While we do try to market ourselves as a family run Yorkshire Inn, rather than a gastro pub/ boutique hotel, we still aim to provide excellent food and service and I'm sorry that you... More

Visited for Sunday lunch as was in the area heading to masham for a 2 night stay. Had a 2 course Sunday lunch. Goose rilletes and scallops starters. Just ok. Mains pork and a beef. Pretty small serving and slightly lacking in taste. Wine a bit expensive for a 175ml serving. Altogether expected more for price. Atmosphere was dead. Seamed... More

Had a fabulous lunch last Sunday, lovely welcome, delicious food. Their dog friendly policy in the bar area is a huge bonus for us! - Thank you!

Six of us visited on a cold night in January. The fires were roaring and the welcome was warm. The food was superb, everyone commented on all the dishes, the wine list was excellent and the service friendly and helpful without being overpowering. My only small comment would be to have a better option of ales, disappointing to find two... More

We visited the Blue Lion in mid-February to celebrate both my wife's birthday and Valentine's Day. We were expecting somewhere really special given the accolades that have been showered on this place in recent years but what we got was no more than pretty good pub food. Don't get me wrong - it's a lovely pub with a beautiful old... More

Such a fantastic pub with so much Character in the pub area - quite Victorian and then going through to the stunning dining room. So cosy and brilliant atmosphere. Outstanding food and service. Can not wait to return

Never had such a bad lunch. Leek and potato soup turned up as sweet potato soup. Smoked salmon mousse was grey and tasteless, possibly smoked mackerel. The waiter and "chef" argued that the mousse was as it should be, but would not taste it! Both dishes were sent back and replaced by soufflés in melted cheese. The main course of... More

There seems to be a common problem with pubs who think they are restaurants. All the effort goes into food and wine, which is fine, but please pay the same attention to your beer. Beer sales are on the increase and many people want to eat quality food, which the Blue Lion has but with a good punt before the... More

I'm glad I wasn't paying for the meal I've just had at the Blue Lion. The smoked salmon and scallop starters were tiny - the salmon pate only needing 1/2 slice of melba toast. The scallop's sauce was welded on to the shell. The mains didn't get any better. Cold roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings and carrots with the black... More
