Great busy atmosphere, cosy traditional decor, this is a proper English pub with a broad range of customers a great menu and extremely well priced drinks. There is a big difference between the atmosphere in the bar - bustling - and the dining area - quiet. Other reviews have said the dining area was drab but I thought it was... More

We ate here for lunch, the waitresses were very friendly and welcoming, we both had the sea food chowder, delicious and filling and good value for money. This is a traditional pub with the menu on a blackboard in the fire place which you have to go and read, however apart from that you receive service at your table, mentioning... More

We stayed a few yards away I the Alexandra Hotel and ate there the previous evening after pre drinks in the Volunteer Inn. Our evening meal at the Alexandra came to around £ 80, which was £60 more than the two excellent meals we had in the Volunteer. Make no mistake the food in the Alexandra was excellent as I... More

Came here with the family for an evening meal. Ate in the dining room which did not instil much confidence - grubby and dark. I had the crab linguine and it smelt so fishy could not eat it so swopped with my husband who had the monkfish curry. The fish was rubbery and over cooked and must be the first... More

This is a small rather old fashioned pub. There is a public bar where you can eat if you wish, and a dining room if you prefer tables and chairs. We tried both, the public bar for lunch (seafood chowder - delicious), and the dining room for dinner (steaks - equally delicious). On both occasions, they were busy with a... More

Sunday night in Lyme Regis doesn't offer a lot of options. We chose The Volunteer Inn, it looked so welcoming from the street. The pub is divided into two areas. The public bar was busy with regulars so we decided to eat in the seperate dining room. Tastefully fitted out, simple wooden tables, interesting well hung water colours grace one... More

We were sat in a pub over looking the harbour trying to decide on dinner, so we checked the trip advisor app and saw The Volunteer Inn. We thought we would give it a go and boy it didn't disappoint! Its a lovely traditional pub, quite small, but that adds to the charm. We sat in the bar but there... More

Looking for somewhere to eat, in a town where the food outlets are numerous, it was nice to find a real pub with a decent menu. Inside, the bar (O'Donnell's Bar), was full of charm and character. Admittedly the seats were 'compact', and for 4 of us we were somewhat tightly packed, but that's what adds to the ambience and... More

Someone has obviously taken a great deal of effort here with it's inviting candle-lit dining room. Unfortunately, our steaks were not of good quality nor their accompaniments and service seemed to be indifferent and more focused on the bar activity next door. Disappointing, as it could be so much better with a bit more effort.

We saw that the Volunteer had changed hands since we last visited, and the food reviews were good - so we had to try it. The food was good - exceptionally good - but the environment was a big let-down. The bar side of the pub was pretty crowded, to we went into the dining room side. There we were... More
