Description: The Volunteer Inn is a family-run, seventeenth century pub located in the heart of Lyme Regis in Dorset. One of the only remaining pubs on the high street, The Volunteer sells a range of local ales and ciders and has been a regular in the Good Beer Guide and a CAMRA member for over a decade. Although famous for it's ales, the Volunteer now also serves excellent food offering a daily changing menu.

Lyme has become very over priced for food recently but The Volunteer offers reasonably priced food that you'd hope and expect from a pub. No frills just tasty food washed down by excellent beers.

good beer, banter and a proper fire as well! there's usually a balance a 5p on a lemon in a bucket on the bar there too; always convinced i can do it after a few!

The food, atmosphere and service here, in my opinion is very good. I had the fish pie which offered generous chunks of fish with a tasty topping of cheesy mashed potato (yum). My partner had steak and chips with onion rings...except there were no onion rings. We asked the waitress where they were and she pointed to the sautéed onions... More

owner fitted us in without a booking on a busy Saturday evening. He gave a excellent impression of running the place single-handed, beer went down well, as did 2 brilliant local fish dinners.

The lively bar is full of atmosphere and sells excellently-kept well-priced beers. The excellence of the bar is matched by the excellence of the cuisine in the separate tastefully decorated dining area, The spicy monkfish is particularly good. Service is very cheerfully efficient. We spent a week in LR and found this easily the best bet for a drink and... More

Great busy atmosphere, cosy traditional decor, this is a proper English pub with a broad range of customers a great menu and extremely well priced drinks. There is a big difference between the atmosphere in the bar - bustling - and the dining area - quiet. Other reviews have said the dining area was drab but I thought it was... More

We ate here for lunch, the waitresses were very friendly and welcoming, we both had the sea food chowder, delicious and filling and good value for money. This is a traditional pub with the menu on a blackboard in the fire place which you have to go and read, however apart from that you receive service at your table, mentioning... More

We stayed a few yards away I the Alexandra Hotel and ate there the previous evening after pre drinks in the Volunteer Inn. Our evening meal at the Alexandra came to around £ 80, which was £60 more than the two excellent meals we had in the Volunteer. Make no mistake the food in the Alexandra was excellent as I... More

Came here with the family for an evening meal. Ate in the dining room which did not instil much confidence - grubby and dark. I had the crab linguine and it smelt so fishy could not eat it so swopped with my husband who had the monkfish curry. The fish was rubbery and over cooked and must be the first... More

This is a small rather old fashioned pub. There is a public bar where you can eat if you wish, and a dining room if you prefer tables and chairs. We tried both, the public bar for lunch (seafood chowder - delicious), and the dining room for dinner (steaks - equally delicious). On both occasions, they were busy with a... More
