Well nothing will prepare you for a visit to this restaurant,a school hall filled with bric a brac and items from old pubs and churches. The huge very comfortable sofas were very welcoming aswell as the owners. The menu is quite small but food was cooked well and not over priced.I recommend you popping in a least once to experience this Hogwarts... Very limited menu with pizzas taking up half. None of our group of 4 had a pizza but they looked good and seemed to be appreciated on the next table. We had either sea bass or haddock which were simply done but very tasty. The puddings were also simple but tasty - very good. I would particularly commend the bar... More

This was our third visit. each time the food has been superb. The menu is small but perfectly formed. The atmosphere relaxed and friendly. The owners and staff alway friendly and attentive but not obtrusive. We did not see the friendly family dog tonight i hope he is ok? I strongly recomend this restaurant.I

We visited this quirky resturant with friends tonight. While the staff were friendly and the ambience great the food was lack lustre. I hate eating simple food badly sourced and cooked. Also poor value for money. What are people eating at home to then give good praise to this poor catering. Never again

This delightful family run restaurant never fails to please. We received a personal welcome from the owner/ chef. The bar area is comfortable with squishy sofas and filled with interesting object d'Art with a retro feel. Newspapers are available too. Vegetarian options are available. I had the chicken Caesar salad which came with large chunks of tender chicken. Local produce... More

We had friends visiting and so we decided to try Sunday lunch at the Chalk & Cheese. What a lovely surprise we had - and that was just when we walked through the door and saw what an eccentric, but relaxing, place it is! We all had a drink first in the bar. We then went through to lunch in... More

It is very rare to find somewhere with real character, but this is one. The place is full of eclectic curios, but it doesn't feel in the slightest bit contrived - so many pubs and restaurants look as though someone's been sent out to buy a ton of crap to nail to the walls to give the place 'character'. We'd... More

I visited my parents in Shouldham (travelled from New Zealand) and got to know the Chalk and Cheese quite well - my friend from Scotland came to visit and stayed at the C & C and was upgraded to the wonderful double room complete with a 4 poster bed! We spend most evenings in the bar surrounded by the gorgeous... More

Booked for Sunday lunch with guests. Ale is good but whoever cooked needs lessons. Starters poor but edible, cold haloumi, yuk. Toad in the hole, very very burnt with the top sliced off to remove the worst. Roast beef, was not beef sliced off a roast, tough and overcooked, another burnt yorkshire pud, turned upside down in the hope we... More

First, I have to declare an interest... Andrew has been a person of note in the real ale world locally to me for some years, first opening a bar at Downham Market Railway Station some years ago to much local acclaim and a mention in the CAMRA guide in recent years. Then selling up to start this venture. I only... More
