I last visited The Bear 35 years ago when they served superb gourmet seven course meals. Then we moved away. So when a friend suggested we meet up for lunch half way between our homes, I jumped at the change to sample their menu and revisit the place. The Bear looked great and very smart from the outside, however the... More

We went for lunch at The Bear last week. My wife had their beef and ale pie which was highlighted as being good. The pie was OK, although the pastry was not "short" - she could bang it with her knife without it breaking! However, the vegetables were awful, so overcooked the green beans had gone wrinkly. We asked for... More

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We are sorry to hear of your experience and have spoken to our Kitchen Team about how long vegetables are being cooked for. Our Beef and Ale Pie is indeed a ‘House Favourite’ but we are sorry to hear that the pastry was not to your liking. We are also... More

My Aunt treated my wife and I to lunch here. Unfortunately the food was typical of many "cheap" lunch menu's and was thoroughly disappointing. To finish off the meal the staff going off shift forgot to mention to the staff coming on duty that there was food ordered so having waiting 25 minutes for a dessert to arrive we found... More

There is something very wrong about the negative reviews since The Bear changed ownership last year. We were delighted with the value for money and relaxed and peaceful surroundings. Ample space inside and out, good wine selection and guest ale. Four of us selected the Lamb Shank followed by sweets from the special of the day menu. Service was prompt... More

Cheap bar food at around £6 for a main course. Quality ok but gets very popular and there can be a 45 minute wait for food

Thank you for your review. We do have main meals starting from £5.99 alongside an extensive menu which we hope offers a choice for everyone. The Bear is popular and with this we do sometimes have to put a wait time on food orders but we do make sure that guests are advised as soon as possible of any possible... More

I visit the bear when I meet up with a friend as it's half way for us both to travel. We have been visiting for some years now. However, I fear our latest visit will be our last, which is a shame as the environment is good. We met for lunch when it was not busy, but our table needed... More

We are sorry to hear of your experience. Following a full investigation it would appear that the sandwich ordered by your friend was sent out on the incorrect bread for which we apologise. Our sandwiches are served on a choice of organic bloomer, ciabatta, wrap or multigrain bread. On the day in question we had ran out of the multigrain... More

I think you get what you pay for and for £5 for a main it is very good value, would go back, best early in the evening.

Live in Hungerford and have received mixed revues about the Bear. Decided to give it try.NEVER AGAIN. The staff were really friendly and helpful but the food was terrible. Both meals had little appeal when they arrived as not much effort seemed to be made with presentation. The chicken my wife ordered was overdone and dry with soggy skin. My... More

We are sorry to hear of your wait for food and the confusion over the time for the table. There was a breakdown in communication over the time the event in the function room were eating and our receptionist was trying to book you a table so that your meals would be cooked and served before the 70 people sat...
