Lovely warm Welcome on arrival

We recently stayed for 2 nights at the Bear and found no evidence of the negative reviews relating to the staff. On arrival we were welcomed by Caroline who was friendly, efficient and helpful and gave an excellent first impression of the Hotel - a credit to the Bear! The room was warm and... read more

Well, many tables had empty glasses and bottles on, we found a suitable table, once cleared. Ordered three meals which were the same!. Started arrived with a waitress not wearing a smile, nearly losing the mushrooms. Main Course arrived in a timely fashion, but three different portion size's. We then cleared the table, set the dirty crockery on the bar, having... More

Looking forward to a special Valentines meal but it was a big disappointment. Food was cold, service was slow and the quality of food was poor. It was a very full restaurant and it felt on the night that they just couldn't cope

I struggle to understand why anyone would choose the Bear over the infinitely better John O'Gaunt across the road. The food is cheap but not great quality, the beer is poor, and the service is awful. The staff seem to think they are doing you a favour by giving your cutlery, napkins and condiments to accompany your meal.

Lots of investment has gone into improving the hotel. And it looks good - but where is the investment on excellent service and catering staff?? The Sunday lunch was very average - hard carrots - certainly not worth the money. The staff were friendly enough but not attentive - they were trying to service in 2 separate areas by the... More

An average affair not much to be excited about? Clean and relaxing but could do much better. A little smile would go a long way at times

I went here for the first time in December at a firm’s Christmas dinner, and it was good. While there I was given a voucher for a reduced price meal, so in early January my family & I went to the Bear for dinner on a Saturday night. The Bear is part of a national chain of pub-restaurants, and as... More

Hi John, We are pleased you enjoyed your firms Christmas do with us and that you came back to try our main menu. We are delighted that you found us friendly and unhurried, we like to pride ourselves in a relaxed atmosphere. We do agree that the Merlot is a great wine, definitely quaffable. We had a lovely meal at this restaurant and cannot understand the bad reviews about it. Perhaps people expect too much for the price. It is a standard Old English Inns menu and the chef makes a good job of it. A reasonable amount of choice and acceptable prices. The staff were very accommodating to our requests and very friendly,... More

Went early December with a group of WI ladies so had a set meal for £15 a head. Prawn cocktail was a few prawns mixed with rose sauce and a few bits of soft melba toast, no butter. Xmas dinner very plain, stuffing tasted like baked paxo. Dessert was a choc slice which was fine but nothing grand. The portions... More

Thank you for reviewing our restaurant, we are pleased that you enjoyed the lunchtime visit and the level of service we provide. We are disappointed that we missed the butter off your prawn cocktail. In regards to your main course, we served over 800 turkey roast during the Christmas period. It is difficult to jazz up a Roast dinner without... More

For a brewery owned hotel, can't believe how poor the beer is. I have given it a few goes in the last few months hoping it will get better. Real shame used to be a real nice bar before Green King messed it up.

Thank you for taking the time to review The Bear, we are very proud of our real ales here and as such are extremely honoured to have achieved the Cask Marque accreditation for the quality of how the beers are kept, therefore we are bitterly disappointed that you do not like them. As a brewery owned outlet the majority of... More
